I hate Hotels who advertise 'Free Wifi' but its not available when you arrive and its too late to cancel. I specifically needed a Hotel in York with Wifi in my room. The Churchill Hotel advertises quote 'Wi-fi is available in the entire hotel and is free of charge'. I had some important work to complete prior to a business meeting the following day yet I was unable to access the internet from my room. I complained but my complaint fell on deaf ears. One day I will take legal action on establishments who mis-represent themselves, I'm totally fed up that they get away with this and I hope this review is read by someone who takes their booking somewhere else!
Paul Wicks

Room Tip: The room I had was very compact, clean but very compact.

Dear Mr Wicks,

Free wifi and also direct access through a LAN socket in each bedroom is available at the Churchill Hotel.

We have become increasingly aware that a minority of IPad users, like yourself, have encountered difficulty in picking up the signal in all bedrooms. Unfortunately the device relies solely upon a strong Wifi signal and cannot be connected via the second means provided of using an internet cable. I stongly dispute that we misrepresent ourselves, rather I feel that it is the device's limitations that have been denying users access in all areas to our freely available internet.

We strive to be attentive to our guests needs and subsequent to your stay we have purchased some wireless access points that connect to the LAN socket in a bedroom, this means that Ipad users can borrow these from the Reception desk to locally boost the wireless signal if required.

I thank you for your feedback which will benefit future guests, I'm just sorry that you could not have been more understanding of the situation at the time.

Yours sincerely
John Wallace

We enjoyed a two day break here after reading reviews from the lovely Trip Advisor community. Booked a short notice break from the hotel's own web site. The hotel looks like a manor house and with about 30 rooms which gives a friendly feeling and it is only about ten minutes' walk into the city centre.

We had a small but perfectly formed double on the ground floor. Comfy bed, decent shower (though over the bath rather than separate cubicle), window that looked out onto gardens at the back so a quiet night's sleep plus it could be opened for fresh air, DAB radio in the room so choice of own station (which I much prefer to TV). Staff friendly and helpful.

The Piano bar was nice for a drink before heading out for a meal. The pianist starts fairly early, at least on Saturday, so we heard a few tunes over our drinks. There is seating outside which would make a great spot to relax in better weather.

Dining room looked nice enough but we preferred to eat out. The breakfast was £10 a go which is not bad by hotel prices, we were going to try it on our last morning but missed the finish time (we thought the receptionist had said 1000 but it turned out to end at 0930). The waitress did offer to ask the kitchen for us anyway but we turned down the offer.

Parking available at the hotel and we left the car there until we moved it at lunchtime on the day we checked out. No extra charges for parking which some of the corporates try to add.

Would stay here again if visiting York.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We also thank you for booking direct through our own website, it's becoming somewhat of a necessity for us really to promote our own website and our Facebook booking engine. We really want to keep our room prices down but are fighting against the number of bookings that are made through the online travel agencies as these typically charge 20% of the total cost as their commission.

We stayed at the Churchill for one night in August. We had a double room, which was modern and clean, but pretty small. The bathroom was also modern- with a great spa style shower. Breakfast was nice in a large comfortable dining room. The price was fine. As you can tell, I'm not jumping up and down about this hotel- but there's nothing to complain about really either!

Start to finish we really enjoyed our two night stay (wish it could have been longer) Great location, genuinely warm welcome, useful advice, friendly efficient service throughout and superb food, what more could you ask ?
Our room was just fine, the four poster was a nice surprise. We had tea, coffee and bottled water supplied and the bang up to date plumbing made showering the pleasant experience it should be.
We liked best the people and the food, we really can't think of any negatives and we will certainly return.

Room Tip: We stayed in an upstairs room which was fine, can't comment on other rooms but didn't hear a...
