We booked Churchill for our wedding and everything about the day was fantastic. Rachel, our wedding planner, was on hand all day to ensure everything ran smoothly which it did. All the guests commented on how nice the hotel was and all the people who stayed for the evening said the rooms were very nice, clean and comfortable. We stayed in the prince of wales suite and it was well worth the money.

Breakfast was good and so was the service, we cant fault anything about it and would highly recommend staying here, and indeed getting married there.

Room was ok with comfortable bed. Not much space to put toiletries etc.

Full English breakfast quality of ingredients poor for example bacon covered in white gunge.

You had to make the toast yourself on one of those feed it through machines that never work well. Service finished at 9.30 and if you are one of the last in the restaurant, tables adjacent to you are sprayed while you are still eating. Breakfast is not included in the room rate and if I had to stay there again I would go out for breakfast

Initially found the Churchill on a hotel booking website, but contacted the hotel direct and was able to get a good deal. I requested a superior room but as these were all booked was given an upgrade. We stayed at the Churchill for two nights 8th/9th October in a luxury room in the old part of the house. We arrived early and although too early for our room we were able to leave our car in the hotel's car park. This is free of charge and that is certainly a bonus in York.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, complete with four poster bed, sofa and bath, bathroom also well appointed with double size walk in shower. Everywhere was spotless, and bedding and towels good quality. Although our room was on the front of the hotel, the hotel lies back from the main road and we didn't find traffic noise any issue. There was a wedding reception on our first night and this did not cause any disturbance as our room was behind fire doors off the the main landing. A good nights sleep, the bed was so comfortable and the heavy curtains ensure the room stays dark.
Breakfast offered a good selection of fresh fruits and juices, cereals and the pastries with a menu of cooked to order hot dishes. Excellent eggs benedict , smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, my favourites. Service was friendly and efficient and to a high standard.
We certainly would recommend the Churchill , if you want a luxury romantic break with some sightseeing on your doorstep.
Thanks to Dave for your welcome and filling us in on the history of the hotel, and thanks to John for a super room. Hope we can make it back soon.

Room Tip: Contact the hotel direct, so helpful with personal touch Go for luxury room as these are in the old...

I stayed at the Churchill for one night in July with my elderly mother who has mobility problems. I rang the hotel on several occassions beforehand to confirm the room was accessible etc and was assured it was.
We arrived and were shown to our room , via the lift ..great! However when we opened the door there were 4 or 5 steps into the room!!!
The room itself was small with no wondow as such..only a skylight. We both found it rather claustrophobic.
I did speak to the manager who admitted the hotel had got it wrong but since the hotel was full there was nothing we could do.
This ws a treat for my mother after illness and I feel we were somewhat let down by the staff's lack of forsight and understanding.

Room Tip: Ask for a full description of the room!

The food here really is very good - excellent in fact - but the experience of dining here is let down by the poor service.
To give a couple of examples (there are more), bread/olives etc (delicious) were served at the same time as our starters and the waitress poured so much white wine into our glasses that it was warm by the time we had drank half.
After coffee (mine was served five minutes before my partner's) we were ignored for the twenty-five minutes it took me to finally lose patience and leave my seat to find someone to ask if we could have the bill.
The food is very good (the chocolate brownie dessert was one of the finest I have ever eaten) but I would be reluctant to visit again because of the excruciatingly bad service. This is a real shame.

Just returned from a three night visit to the Churchill with my wife and our 18-month-old. This is a lovely hotel. Recently refurbished throughout with very nice dining room and communal areas. The staff were delightful and extremely helpful. Food was excellent (especially the early dining option, which was great value).

The only minor negatives were that our room (in the new wing at the back of the building) was quite small, especially after the addition of a baby bed, and the bed itself was quite small. There was no WiFi reception in the room, although it was available downstairs around the reception area and bar. It might be worth checking on these points when you book.
