my partner and i stayed here for two nights between xmas . we were shown to the jennie suite which was very tiny hardly any wardrobe space for hanging clothes .within the hour i went to reeption and asked to be moved.the only room they could suggest was the clementine suite ,when we went up a very long flight of stairs we were face with a very depressing tired room not at all what i expected of a luxury suite.handle were falling off bedside tables stains on the tatty carpet and a bet that loked like it had been there since the place was built ! however we were so tired and the time of the year we knew we might struggle to get somewhere else, the room was adjacent to a roof which had some sort of generator going all night long the bed was the most uncomfortable i have ever slept in.so when i went to breakfast i asked to speak to the duty manager who was very condecending and said she couldnt do anything so i told her i would get in touch with booking, com to see what they could do,which i did ,they sent an email to them asking the hotel to try and accomodate us.on checking out i asked to speak to the general manager who was also very dismissive so i said i wasnt happy and would only be prepared to pay what i felt appropriate at which he said he would go and speak to booking.com again.my partner went to the car to put the bags in and came in and asked who had blocked his car in,their was a man standing by the desk who i assumed was a customer.he was in fact the owner who had been called in and he had blocked our car in so we couldnt "get away" without paying and that he was going to call the police which he did. a policeman arrived and this obnoxious human said that we were con artists, after much arguing and more nasty comments made by this man we agreed to a small reduction.at the end day it wasnt about the money it had spoilt a very special couple of days for us,and a very upsetting experience.my advice would be dont go near the place!! my partner and i stayed here for two nights between xmas . we were shown to the jennie suite which was very tiny hardly any wardrobe space for hanging clothes .within the hour i went to reeption and asked to be moved.the only room they could suggest was the clementine suite ,when we went up a very long flight of stairs we were face with a very depressing tired room not at all what i expected of a luxury suite.handle were falling off bedside tables stains on the tatty carpet and a bet that loked like it had been there since the place was built ! however we were so tired and the time of the year we knew we might struggle to get somewhere else, the room was adjacent to a roof which had some sort of generator going all night long the bed was the most uncomfortable i have ever slept in.so when i went to breakfast i asked to speak to the duty manager who was very condecending and said she couldnt do anything so i told her i would get in touch with booking, com to see what they could do,which i did ,they sent an email to them asking the hotel to try and accomodate us.on checking out i asked to speak to the general manager who was also very dismissive so i said i wasnt happy and would only be prepared to pay what i felt appropriate at which he said he would go and speak to booking.com again.my partner went to the car to put the bags in and came in and asked who had blocked his car in,their was a man standing by the desk who i assumed was a customer.he was in fact the owner who had been called in and he had blocked our car in so we couldnt "get away" without paying and that he was going to call the police which he did. a policeman arrived and this obnoxious human said that we were con artists, after much arguing and more nasty comments made by this man we agreed to a small reduction.at the end day it wasnt about the money it had spoilt a very special couple of days for us,and a very upsetting experience.my advice would be dont go near the place!!

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for our wedding anniversary, we paid a little more for a deluxe room which was definitely worth it. We stay in York a couple of times a year but have previously not been able to get a room in this hotel. Location is great and free parking a bonus- this can be an issue in York and you often have to pay. Breakfast was cooked to order and was great. Would definitely recommend this hotel and stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the original part of the hotel are a lot bigger although more expensive.

A superb place to stay when visiting york . If you want somewhere a little bit special this is ideal. Very proffesional staff , very stylish and classy room with bath tub in the bedroom. Only complaint the cooked breakfast was far too small of a portion not what I.m used to. Good spot for exploring the city and free parking which is important in york.

The Churchill is situated just a few hundred yards north of the city walls and is about 5 minutes' walk from Bootham Bar, one of the historic gates. It's an excellent location and, if you're travelling by car from the north or west, very convenient to reach from the A1. The parking at the hotel is a real bonus in what is a quite congested small city.

It's a gracious old building set a little back from the main road. Internally, it has been brought up to date with tasteful furnishings and decoration.

We were greeted warmly and shown to our room, which was of ample size and well equipped with TV, kettle, ironing board and iron, radio alarm and phone. We were amused to find two cups but only one saucer and it was the same after the room had been serviced. The only problem worth mentioning - and we're being very picky here - was a slightly intrusive background noise from the central heating, which uses ducted air. Overall, it was a very good room. The full-body shower was wonderful.

We had breakfast in the hotel. The buffet was adequate, with fruit, pastries and preserves, but the emphasis here is on cooked rather than continental breakfasts. The scrambled eggs (too often a rubbery disappointment) were excellent and the full English was good without being overwhelming. Service was friendly. We ate out at night but the dining room menu was very tempting and we noticed that they do an early evening two-course dinner for around £12, which looked excellent value.

So: convenient, comfortable and friendly, and good value too. Look out for particularly good rates on their Facebook site. We shall be back.

We stayed for 3 day at xmas 2011 the hotel was lovey room was very nice to the staff were excellent nothing was to much for them , they were very friendly the food was the best i have ever had and always looked to good to eat,we did have a few things we were not happy about ,which were there were no xmas decorations up just a tree which was very nice i might say ,but when you book for xmas itself you would expect it to feel like xmas it never did none of the rooms and bar were decorated at all ,the other thing was the entertainment we were told the entertainment was the best ,,well all we had was a man on the piano who was very good, but that was it,and was only on at meal times, found out later he was the owner ,they seem to concentrate more on the public coming into the restaurant for xmas dinner and boxing day...

Stayed for one night between Xmas and New Year 2011 and were allocated room 109 which was basically behind reception through a door and you are there. Initial impression was room was very small but ok with a small but adequate bathroom. Walls in room had lots of dirty marks on them and a hole, waring of the carpet was very evident. We soon realised that the room was extremely hot and even after turning off the heating, which didnt seem to help, the heat was overpowering and we could not sleep. The towel rail in the bathroom remained red hot and we could not turn this down. Went for breakfast at 9am and was seated quickly, it was help yourself to cereal, yoghurt, fruit but waitress service for tea/coffee and cooked breakfast, we helped ourself to some cereal and fruit juice and waited for the waitress to take our order, and waited and waited . . . . my partner had to go and ask her to take our order in the end, there was no apology for the 35 minute wait! We eventually got our tea/coffee, no milk arrived so we had to use milk from main table for the cereal! Our breakfast arrived eventually which was very very average, poached eggs were overcooked therefore yolk was hard, no beans or tomatoes therefore breakfast was extremely dry. Checked out at 10.30am which was quick and with no problems. Dont think I would stay at this hotel again and wouldnt recommend it to friends.
