This is a lovely old hotel, with a wonderful reception/concierge staff -- helpful, cheerful, efficient. Location is excellent, everything in walking distance. And, importantly for us, it has a parking on site -- a real bonus1
Our room was a bit small, but still big enough to accommodate the rollaway bed we requested so that our daughter could share with us. The room was done up to a high standard and had good bedding and a firm mattress.
Dinner was first-rate, well prepared, well presented. Breakfast was rather more average, but still fine as these things go and lots of fresh fruit on offer.
Overall, the Churchill is excellent value. With a child at uni here, we will definitely come back!

we stayed at the churchill hotel thursday and friday 28/29 june whilst the hotel is very good everywhere is very clean and staff could not do enough for you. they are a function hotel we had a graduation party on the thursday night and a wedding on the friday which then had people slamming doors and talking in passage outside room at 3. 30am., which is fine if you go to party but not as a tourist even though it is very handy for most of the attractions.

Room Tip: book a room at the back of hotel as pople gather around th front smoking at shouting

Stayed for two nights, the 20th and 21st June. The hotel provided a wedding breakfast for our party of 20 on the afternoon of the 21st. The arrangements with the hotel manager went very well before the occasion. We were allowed to come up with our own menu with his help and suggestions. The food was very good on the day and everyone commented on how good the buffet was.
The staff involvement during the reception was just how we liked it. They were available if we needed them and invisible when we didn't.
All in all a very satisfactory experience.
A very likely venue for our first anniversary next year.

We stayed for one night over last weekend 23-24 June.
The hotel is just a short walk from the city centre, the Minster and many of the major tourist spots of York. Despite this it is in a peacefull and pleasant setting fronting on to Bootham. There is adequate free parking for guests which, as was noted in an earlier review, is a big advantage in a major tourist spot. The check in was quick and easy and the reception staff were friendly and very helpful. Although the room was a little small it was immaculate and well decorated in the 'boutique' style so fashionable at the moment. Facilities were good and the bathroom had a multi function shower (no bath) with a variety of spray heads and knozzles, however, the only one that worked properly was the main overhead spray. I got the impression that the water pressure was too low for the other feature to function properly.
The beds are very comfortable with good quality bed linen and pillows and plentiful tea & coffee making facilities were supplied.
The public rooms are very stylish, again in the boutique style and the main staircase in the older part of the building is a superb feature. The Piano Bar and restaurant are comfortable with efficient service from pleasant and helpful staff and although we didnt try the food - we were attending a funtion elswhere that evening - it looked and smelled very good. Price wise the Churchill compares well with similar hotels in York and in terms of position and facilities is certainly very good value for money.
I would have no hesitation in staying here again and in fact will always try to when I stay in York. Be warned though - the Churchill is a very popular hotel and you may have difficulty with availability if you leave it too late before booking !

Room Tip: If driving and using Sat Nav - check it doesnt give you the direct route to the hotel as this takes you through the centre of York which can be very congested, especially in summer. Try a route via the far side of the Railway Museum which brings you in on the same road but from the opposite direction.

The Churchill Hotel is in a great spot; close to all of York's attraction... and it has a decent sized car park (big plus point if you're travelling by car, as York is a notoriously expensive place to park). The hotel itself is excellent; a mixture of old and new. What really impressed us was the brilliant staff; everyone bent over backwards for us. The night porter kept the bar open late (early!) for the wedding party we were with... and in the morning the breakfast staff made a bacon butty and brought it up to our room when I joked that my husband had a bit of a hang over and was too tired to come down for breakfast! Nothing was too much trouble; I'd definitely recommend. The room (116) we had was extremely small but we didn't spend much time in it, so weren't too concerned. Wouldn't have liked to have spent more than a night in it. Not all rooms were this small because our friends' room was massive; think we were just unlucky.
