Firstly, I must say that we stayed there for one night only and it was August Bank Holiday - the biggest weekend for York's Racing Calendar. When we arrived, not only was there a wedding but also a Rotary Club luncheon, so no room for us in the car park. We were told if we had arrived half an hour later it would have been almost empty. This was pretty accurate but, as we had already parked in the long stay car park and would have to move our car by 11a.m. the next day anyway, there seemed little point in moving. The staff were all friendly, professional and attentive. The hotel itself is decorated to a high standard and, despite the pressures of so much going on, the staff kept everything running smoothly, with a sense of calm and peace. As others have said, our room was small and it worked best if one of us sat down while the other moved around! The bathroom too was tiny. Both were spotlessly clean, well furnished and I had a peaceful night's sleep. Dinner was excellent; good choice, high quality, beautifully cooked and presented. By contrast, breakfast was a tad disappointing and, for some reason, while coffee and a cooked breakfast were brought to you, toast was a do it yourself affair. At the price they charged, I didn't really understand why! I would stay again but I wouldn't opt for breakfast as there are plenty of good places within easy walking distance as the hotel is situated within easy walking distance of the city.

Lots of good things about the Churchill, but also lots of negatives.

The good things centre around its location, just a short walk from the city walls and all the tourist attractions. Second is its free car park, but beware - if you arrive during a wedding or Rotary Club lunch, you will have no chance in getting in, and you will be left parking in an expensive council car park! Staff are very good in general, and in particular the waitress who served us dinner the night we stayed. The evening meal we had in the restaurant was first class.

The main negative is the very small rooms, and even smaller bathroom. Getting in and out of the shower meant bumping elbows, shoulders, and anything else that got in the way. No complimentary shampoo, just shower gel. The breakfast was OK, but look out for the tiniest sausage you will ever see on a breakfast plate - just two inches long, and only one of them!

You won't be able to leave your car after you check out at 11, especially if there is a wedding on.

So a number of small niggles which detracted slightly from our expectations. However, overall four stars, and will return - but not during the wedding season!

I recently spent one night at this churchill ,never again. When we arrived the porter who checked us in was very polite and offered to carry our bags up to the room for us, that was the good point. The bad points were that the double room that we had booked was a twin and the beds had been zipped together which i have to say was very uncomfortable. When we expressed our disapointment they really didnt seem to care. The bathroom was very small and had only a shower not a bath like the web woul like you to think, so if you are booking here and would like a bath then i suggest you request one.Dont take it for granted that you will walk up the grand staircase as shown on website, we were shown up the backstairs that are dull and drab.

The rooms were fine, the batheroom was small with few amenaties. Since it was summer the room was hot and the only relief was to open the window which was on the main street.
There was a sense of luxury without the luxury. Breakfast was fine. The restaurant was of a high standard with a veried dinner menu. The staff was outstanding and went out of their way to help.

Room Tip: when booking ask for a garden room - less noise

From the moment we checked in we had a warm welcome from Dave who kindly showed us to our superior room which was very comfortable. Handy having the free car park and only a short stroll into the centre. There was a good variety of choice at breakfast catering for all tastes and can recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs although the other half enjoyed the full English. Had dinner on our second night and it was to die for - the presentation and taste was second to none wish we'd eaten here on our first night. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble even fixing the plug in the sink!! Will definitely stay here again next time we visit York. Only downside was the dodgy wi fi signal

A family member stayed there a while ago for a special occasion and we wanted to surprise them by paying for their room in advance. Rang and spoke to John (? manager) - who agreed to sort it all out. I left my credit card details and left it to him - hardly difficult to arrange I would think....

Clearly nothing was sorted as my relatives checked in and were charged as normal for their room - no surprise gift!!

When I rang to ask why I spoke to John again who just kept saying he couldnt understand it but would find out and let me know. I'm still waiting for the explanation some weeks later- and have had not a word of apology for the mix up - they ruined what was meant to be a lovely surprise and haven't even had the decency to apologise.

Poor poor service........
