“Great Location, Fantastic Wedding”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2012

We Stayed at The Churchill over the August bank holiday weekend for my brother's wedding, arriving Friday and checking out Monday.
We stayed in a suite, which was quite a bit more expensive than a regular room, and I did not feel this was value for money. The room was quite small and warm, and compared to the other suite's I saw I felt it was inferior. I am not aware of how much other people paid for these suite's, and this may have been reflected in the price, however I was expecting more for the money I paid.
This was the only drawback to the hotel. The location is excellent, literally only 5 mins walk from the centre.
The wedding went really well. Rachel and the wedding team are a credit to the hotel, they couldn't do enough, and everything ran smoothly. The facilities were also great, plenty of options for different set ups.
The food was also first class, both the wedding breakfast and regualr breakfast.I didn't really drink much at the bar except at the wedding, but the prices were reasonable.
Would return without hesitation, would just be weary about which room I would go with.

Room Tip: The Marakesh Suite isn't the biggest !!

Stayed here for one night - the location is perfect for exploring York without being actually in the centre, which was only approx 5min walk away. The accommodation was very nice as were the public areas of the hotel. It was nice to be able to sit outside with a glass of wine in the evening. Breakfast was also really nice with a good selection of cereals, fruit etc. My only complaint - which the hotel sorted out before we even arrived - is we booked for a family of three and were told on arrival that although we had booked a double room with an extra bed added, their double rooms didn't have space for an extra bed (!) so we had been moved to a family room. I'm not sure why the booking site allowed us to book a double room if it wasn't suitable for what we needed, but you might want to make sure you speak to the hotel about this before you arrive to make sure you don't have an uncomfortable stay!

My partner and I stayed at the Churchill for 3 nights at the end of July. The rooms were nice and clean. They are small but the do fine for a few nights, it was no problem for us. The location is excellent, it is about a 5-10 minute walk to York city centre. We ate in the restaurant once and had no issues, the food was very nice, well cooked and very well presented.

Firstly, I must say that we stayed there for one night only and it was August Bank Holiday - the biggest weekend for York's Racing Calendar. When we arrived, not only was there a wedding but also a Rotary Club luncheon, so no room for us in the car park. We were told if we had arrived half an hour later it would have been almost empty. This was pretty accurate but, as we had already parked in the long stay car park and would have to move our car by 11a.m. the next day anyway, there seemed little point in moving. The staff were all friendly, professional and attentive. The hotel itself is decorated to a high standard and, despite the pressures of so much going on, the staff kept everything running smoothly, with a sense of calm and peace. As others have said, our room was small and it worked best if one of us sat down while the other moved around! The bathroom too was tiny. Both were spotlessly clean, well furnished and I had a peaceful night's sleep. Dinner was excellent; good choice, high quality, beautifully cooked and presented. By contrast, breakfast was a tad disappointing and, for some reason, while coffee and a cooked breakfast were brought to you, toast was a do it yourself affair. At the price they charged, I didn't really understand why! I would stay again but I wouldn't opt for breakfast as there are plenty of good places within easy walking distance as the hotel is situated within easy walking distance of the city.

Lots of good things about the Churchill, but also lots of negatives.

The good things centre around its location, just a short walk from the city walls and all the tourist attractions. Second is its free car park, but beware - if you arrive during a wedding or Rotary Club lunch, you will have no chance in getting in, and you will be left parking in an expensive council car park! Staff are very good in general, and in particular the waitress who served us dinner the night we stayed. The evening meal we had in the restaurant was first class.

The main negative is the very small rooms, and even smaller bathroom. Getting in and out of the shower meant bumping elbows, shoulders, and anything else that got in the way. No complimentary shampoo, just shower gel. The breakfast was OK, but look out for the tiniest sausage you will ever see on a breakfast plate - just two inches long, and only one of them!

You won't be able to leave your car after you check out at 11, especially if there is a wedding on.

So a number of small niggles which detracted slightly from our expectations. However, overall four stars, and will return - but not during the wedding season!

I recently spent one night at this churchill ,never again. When we arrived the porter who checked us in was very polite and offered to carry our bags up to the room for us, that was the good point. The bad points were that the double room that we had booked was a twin and the beds had been zipped together which i have to say was very uncomfortable. When we expressed our disapointment they really didnt seem to care. The bathroom was very small and had only a shower not a bath like the web woul like you to think, so if you are booking here and would like a bath then i suggest you request one.Dont take it for granted that you will walk up the grand staircase as shown on website, we were shown up the backstairs that are dull and drab.

The rooms were fine, the batheroom was small with few amenaties. Since it was summer the room was hot and the only relief was to open the window which was on the main street.
There was a sense of luxury without the luxury. Breakfast was fine. The restaurant was of a high standard with a veried dinner menu. The staff was outstanding and went out of their way to help.

Room Tip: when booking ask for a garden room - less noise
