“Weekend break”
Reviewed 14 January 2014 via mobile

Me and my husband stayed for a weekend in January, it was bought as a gift for our wedding which we were more than grateful for especially as we had an excellent weekend. The staff were exceptionally polite and very helpful nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent we could not of asked for better, the whole atmosphere of the hotel was relaxing and welcoming. The room we stayed in was nicely decorated with a modern feel. We will certainly stay again and highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed here last week for my boyfriends birthday. The hotel was in an extremely good location with the added benefit of free parking which not many hotels offer, and only a short walk to the shops and restaurants/bars etc. The hotel is clean and decorated to a high standard and the staff are welcoming and friendly. We did ask to see another room rather than the one given to us as it didnt have a bath, and we were actually upgraded to a better room which made our stay! We unfortunately cannot comment on the restaurant or breakfast as we did not eat in the hotel, however the restaurant and bar looked lovely. We would definitely return to this hotel when we next visit york.

We stayed overnight in the Holme Lea Manor (the sister venue to the nearby Churchill), which I'll report positively on elsewhere. When settling into our room, the local literature revealed the link between HLM and The Churchill together with a sample menu to illustrate the type of food on offer - on a damp evening after a busy day in York centre, this seemed like an ideal solution to our eating-out dilemma; little did we know what an impeccable dining experience awaited us.

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly restaurant manager and shown to a nice table in the lovely dining room. We turned out to be one of only three couples dining that evening - the ambience was excellent with beautiful piano music all evening ( a recording on this occasion but no doubt live sometimes); our only slight criticism was that perhaps the lights were a touch too low.
We opted for the main menu offering three courses for £29.95. As it turned out we enjoyed an additional free appetiser, together with fresh brioche loaf with fish pate, queen olives and balsamic and olive oil dip.
The menu offered a decent range for each course with perhaps half a dozen choices all of which were imaginative. My starter was pan-fried scallops on a slice of belly pork with pea puree and pear foam? - it was beautifully presented and stunning to eat, especially the pork. Cathy chose the beetroot salad with goats cheese textures - equally lovely in its presentation and very tasty. For main, Cathy took the pan fried tarragon gnocchi with duck egg, truffle etc - on reflection this was perhaps not the best choice because she finds gnocchi a little stodgy; however, having sampled a couple I found them delicious. My main was the Hogget loin in herb crust with pancetta, roast roots and pickled chestnuts - once again it looked lovely and tasted divine with the lamb being perhaps the most tender that I've ever eaten
All the while we were attended by a lovely waitress from Poland who couldn't have been more helpful.
With these courses Cathy enjoyed some Chilean SB and I enjoyed a bottle of Argentine malbec, which went very well with the lamb.
For pudding Cathy enjoyed the selection of homemade ice-creams, whilst I sampled the coffee and pistachio with assorted textures. This proved to be another fine course with tasty pistachio ice cream, coffee panna cotta of ideal consistency, some unusual fluffy pistachio substance topped with powerful espresso flavour caramel crisps,

I can honestly say that for me the food was flawless, the service nicely attentive all in a warm atmosphere with perfect mood music. Perhaps the best over all meal that I've ever had. When visiting York next time, the location for evening meal is set in stone.

Stayed one weekend to attend a wedding. Late booking consequently paid the price though still represented good value in comparison to competitive hotels in York. Standard room somewhat cramped for a couple though well appointed and well presented. Friendly efficient service from all members of staff. The breakfast menu offered a good choice of freshly cooked
quality produce. We didn't sample the restuarant due to other commitments but heard complimentary comments from other guests. Being in a convenient location close to the historic city centre, and all toursit attractions with free parking, we would definately return to this hotel.

Stayed at the Churchill 29/12/13
Went with friends and we requested the room with the bath as a treat for our friends, we were so pleased when they were upgraded and given the chosen room.
We were on a DBB basis and I can honestly say the food is some of the best we have ever had !
The presentation and taste was fantastic, the chef even sent out an appetiser. We were a bit dubious of eating here because of the cost £150 for two people which we considered reasonable.
We had a great stay and close to York centre shops and great old pubs.
Only slight criticism there was a few good cobwebs and plenty of dust in hall and stairways but could put that down to being after Christmas and decks getting a bit tired, otherwise fab this was our 2nd visit and we will definitely return.
Thanks again.

I was a little worried reading some of the other reviews on trip advisor for the hotel but it was fantastic. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who gave us directions and a map to the town centre when we turned up rather early.
Our dog came with us and the staff could not have been more accommodating, offering us breakfast in the bar so the dog could join us and telling us of the local dog friendly pubs!
The room was lovely and spacious and had everything we could need - kettle, iron, ironing board, hair drier.
We ate in the piano room restaurant and the food was delicious and very fairly priced.
The hotel added to a fantastic weekend in York and I would definitely reccommend The Churchill!
The only one negative was that price didn't include breakfast, it wasn't the cheapest room and would have been nice to have been included and not as an optional addition for a cost.

This is the 2nd Christmas we spent at the Churchill and the 4th time stay, and has everything we wanted in a fine old Hotel. The Christmas Package was the best! Rooms were excellent, food outstanding, full service bar great, service the best I have seen in the UK, and the location great with an easy walk into the city of York. Will all ways stay at "The Churchill", when traveling to York from the U.S.

Room Tip: All rooms at The Churchill Hotel are great!
