This is an excellent and convienient little hotel close to the city dentre and the Minster. Quite contemporary, small but adequate rooms. Very attentive staff and good rates. Only downside is the breakfast which is ok but in summer months you need ice to keep things that are out on display cold, full english breakfast was a little light on volume too.

We stayed on Friday 19th for one night after reading so many great reviews. I had booked one of the Luxury Collection rooms as a treat for my wife whose father had recently died.

The room bore no resemblance to the description, no copper bath, no walk in shower, no bath robes or gift wrapped toiletries. The room was nice enough but tiny and my wife asked me not to make a fuss at the time.

We had already booked to eat out at our favourite York eaterie, Rustique. When we got back and into bed we noticed the room was very warm even though there was no heating on. We tried to open the window (sash type) but it wouldn't stay open so I had to prop it with a glass. Unfortunately there was an air conditioining unit outside so we had to close it again due to the noise. We didn't sleep well due to the heat.

Next morning down for breakfast. Cooked food was OK but cold selection was nowhere near what you expext for those prices in hotels nowadays. Small choice of cereals, no prepared fruits and some mangy look croissants.

Evening meal for £20 was spectacular and a very busy kitchen still managed to produce very fish meal.
Ambiance was there and very convivial, staff could not be any nicer everything sparkling clean and staff all well dressed and polite.
rooms was very spacious and again clean as a whistle.

Could not be more centrally based ; walking literally 3 minutes from the city wall and 5 minutes walk from York Minster.

Ample parking in the front of the hotel.

My Husband and I had never visited York but decided to do so to mark his birthday and our Wedding Anniversary. Exceptional good fortune prevailed as we selected The Churchill Hotel for our stay. We chose their luxury b.b.and dinner package. Finding the hotel was easy as was parking our car in their ample on-site car park. The impressive old manor house building nestling in its own attractive gardens was a mere 7 min. easy stroll from the town centre. Check-in was efficient whilst we admired the elegant surroundings before being ushered up a very imposing sweeping staircase lined with huge portraits (unsurprisingly featuring much of the Churchill Family) to our first floor room. The room was an unmitigated delight decorated to the very highest modern standard in hues of black and white. The main feature was the modern black lacquer 4 poster bed - not a trace of chintz in sight! Huge 10' window allowed in lots of air and natural light and was graced with truly magnificent black/white drapes. The bathroom was again ultra modern, ultra clean and beatifully fitted. It featured a huge walk-in powerful shower enhanced by blue downlights from the ceiling. A well equipped hospitality tray completed the picture.
We had some trepidation in going down to dinner in the evening as a small wedding was in progress within the hotel. We certainly need not have worried as we had one of the most splendid meals ever (we have been fortunate to travel quite widely including cruising with Cunard and other major cruiselines. We live near to London and regularly eat out in the capital. My Husband is Italian and therefore good food is almost a religion so the praise of our meals at The Churchill has not been issued lightly.) Not only was the food totally delicious but each platter that arrived was quite simply so beautifully presented it was a work of art. The menu was varied ranging from simple to exotic and our main course choice of boeuf wellington was a masterstroke. It is a simple dish in essence but extremely difficult to get just right so our admiration for the Chef in producing a perfect article was immense. Naturally, such a menu was fittingly supported by an extensive wine cellar too.
Following a very comfortable night's rest and a brisk walk to stimulate our hunger my Husband and I presented ourselves at breakfast. The usual buffet table was evident with staples such as yogurts, cereals, fruit juices, preserves, butter, bread and diy toaster as well as platters of fresh tropical fruit together with danish pastries, muffins and croissants. Tea or coffee pots were served at the table and a menu supplied for choosing the hot part of the breakfast. What a refreshing delight to find not only the
traditional full english breakfast or individual parts thereof available but also smoked salmon and scrambled egg; eggs benedict etc. etc. Husband chose the salmon which was truly excellent and I settled for the eggs benedict which was very good too. Again the presentation was precise and elegant and worthy of a magazine feature....
In conclusion our only regret is that The Churchill is so far away from home that therefore we are unable to avail ourselves of the delights of its restaurant more often. We would have every confidence in recommending a stay at this impressive hotel to the most discerning traveller - in fact they would be daft to miss such an opportunity!!!!!

Attractive, welcoming and well maintained building. The staff were very friendly, attentive and caring. The room was very interesting and spacious with a feature bath in the sleeping area as well as a modern shower in the bathroom. The new extension blends in well with the older building. We ate in the restaurant and the food was delicious and presentation and service excellent, although deciding what to eat was difficult as everything on the menu sounded very appetising! We will definately be going again and recommending it to family and friends.

Stopped on chance as had arrived at York not having booked anywhere. Was shown the room before we checked in and couldn't have got better service. Breakfast was excellent and the early bird supper excellent value.
