Arrived at the hotel at 1.55pm (five minutes before booking time) and there were no parking spaces as the rotary club were using the hotel. The room was small with an oversized bathroom in it taking up most of the room. The air conditioning kept us awake all night, we asked at reception for it to be turned off but it came back on an hour later. The bed was worn and had a deep dip in the matress on my side so i had to sleep the opposite way to my partner! The room had no mini bar. The toilet seat was nearly falling off. The walls (especially around the light switch were dirty. The picture on the TV was terrible and we could only get three watchable channels. We were woke at 8 O'clock on Sunday morning by the fire alarm going off in the room for a few seconds? The rooms were so close together next door's door was right next to and because there was no small corridor as you come into the room it meant you heard everyone come and go at all times loudly! I would not go back to this hotel if it was free. We can't normally afford to stay in hotels that cost £110 a night but it was my girlfriends birthday so i thought i would treat her because we normally stay in chain hotels but this was a lesson learned. This hotel is punching way above it's wait.

After reading earlier reviewer's comments regarding room size we asked for a larger room and were advised to book a superior room in the new annexe - we were not disappointed.
There was ample space with a king-sized bed, two seat sofa and dressing table. There was also a flat screen tv and digital radio in the room. The room was to the rear of the hotel and did not suffer from traffic noise. Our only complaint about the room was that even with the heating switched off the winter thickness duvet made for an uncomfortably warm night - even with the windows open.
All the staff were very pleasant and friendly. The cooked breakfast was of a good standard but the continental choice was limited. We ate in on both nights and the quality of the food could not be faulted, it was excellent value for money. There is apparently a new chef in the kitchen, the quality of his work is of a standard befitting a much more expensive etablishment.

Having stayed at the Churchill on business, i thought it would be nice to stay for my brother in law's 60th birthday, so booked two rooms for him and my sister and myself and my other half. And although the rooms are probably fine for one, with two people in them, they become a bit cramped and there's very little space to put all your bits and bobs. Shower was lovely, although thermostate had a mind of its own and was scalding, but was fixed once we mentioned it.
breakfast was lovely.
was a little disappointed that they made no fuss, effort to make our stay a special occassion, as i'd emailed them well in advance to tell them it was to celebrate a 60th birthday.
good location, clean and nicely furnished, just a bit small if you get one of the standard rooms.

I stayed overnight with a friend and liked the hotel and it's location (we walked from the train station). We had a twin room which was perfectly adequate for our needs and especially liked the hotels tasteful decor. We had the early bird menu in the restaurant on the Saturday night which was very good value and enjoyable and then had coffees in the comfortable and relaxing Piano Bar afterwards. All in all, we enjoyed our stay HOWEVER our first and last point of contact with hotel staff was not good unfortunately. On both occasions the older gentleman on Reception was curt, offhand and definitely not welcoming and this is our lasting impression of the Churchill Hotel and it's a real shame. Thankfully, all other staff we encountered were pleasant and helpful and did make us feel welcome, hence, us now being able to recommend this hotel.

We stayed for two nights and found everything to a very high standard, the rooms very clean, food excellent.
The hotel is only five minutes walk into town,so no need to drive and have hassle trying to find somewhere to park...
Our room was a standard one but it was of ample size and warm

As per most of the other reviews we also found the rooms to be far to small, but also no one has pointed out that the hotel is actually on the main ring road into York centre so busy traffic all day & night and also directly next to the main railway line.

The hotel itself is nice, but is trying too hard to be a Hotel Du Vin but it is definately not even close to being in the same league.

The Churchill is a 5-10 minute walk into centre of York so the location is really good, the breakfast was nice and the staff were all really friendly & helpful - but it left me wondering just how much you have to pay these days for a good hotel room as it certainly wasnt cheap & I definately wouldnt say it was value for money.

A disappointment.

the room was maybe smaller than we expected, really nice decor and very clean, perfect location just a lazy 5 min stroll to the centre of York dinner was lovely and the service was truly impeccable, breakfast not so remarkable, limited choice at the continental bouffet and felt left at our own devices...what was there was good.If the brakfast staff was a little rush generally the staff at the hotel were fantastic, welcoming and helpful, we will use this hotel again.
