“Awful hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2008

I don't know where to start- it was so bad it was funny.
Arrived, lovely street, position and building. Receptionist friendly, bar area etc, nicely decorated. Got to the back of building where our room was up the stairs- Temperature dropped to icy- smelt of damp and fustiness- got to our room (12) and we were appalled. Looked like hadn't been decorated since 70's. Cobwebs hanging above beds, filthy, stained carpet, terrible damp smell, freezing cold (radiator didn't work), sockets didn't work, marks all over walls, shower so hot it was dangerous, then freezing the next second. Cannot believe a hotel has the nerve to hire a room like it.
Apparently other rooms have been refurbished, but not this one.
We complained about the temperature and state- got £25 off room price initially, they couldn't move us as fully booked. We were out all day and evening. Returned to room and everything smelt of damp. Next morning was hoping breakfast would salvage situation, but it was a joke. The service was a calamity- tables left uncleared for ages- people sat down for 30 mins before orders taken, stuff being dropped on floor, other items running out and not being refilled- and milk served in surgar bowls!! When the breakfast came it was foul- god only knows how the chef had cooked everything but it was rank.
As I said 'funny'- Fawlty towers but without Basil.
Duty Manager polite and apologetic, but he was about 12. They clearly need to sort themselves out, and get staff in to overhaul the place as could have potential to be good as location lovely. Staff there unfortunately didn't have a clue.
Only bonus about this was we got almost total bill refunded and only ended up costing £25 for two of us, but never again!!!
PS Beware of the iron which we borrowed. Should have been condemned!!

My wife and I booked a weekend stay (Friday - Sunday) and paid for a superior room. First impressions were fine. Dark-haired bespectacled young girl on reception seemed efficient and showed us to our room (Room 10) on the ground floor. The room appeared nicely decorated, had a LCD TV, aircon and a small terrace area. However, on closer inspection things began to unravel. There was absolutely no information in the room about the hotel, the surrounding area, what time breackfast was ... not a whisper. In one of the drawers we found instruction manuals for some of the equipment in the room - one weird looking device made by Whirlpool must have been good for something - only we never found out what!
One of the bedside lights didn't work, neither did the fridge (inside the wardrobe) and the water seemed to decide to run hot or cold on a whim of its own.
The bathroom was another area of concern. The fancy jet shower over a jacuzzi bath was built for midgets. Anyone over 5ft 5ins would have to develop a severe pain in the neck to get an all over shower. The sink taps were designed in such a way that if you moved them to either hot or cold while the water was running, they knocked the plug plunger - allowing all the water to escpae down the plughole. The bath panel was hanging off and the sealant around the bath was coming away.
We mentioned our problems to a different receptionist (blonde woman) who was rather dismissive and needless to say nothing was done.
Also there's no guarantee you get your room cleaned either - we came back after a five or six hour spell in sticky heat expecting to be able to have a shower before hitting the streets again ... no chance ... room hadn't been cleaned. "They are cleaned throughout the day" was the reply we got. We had to go out for another hour before it was sorted.
Breakfast was a joke. While we were there, the hotel wasn't full. Yet because most people turned up about the same time.. chaos was the result. Cold toast and about an hours wait for a hot breakfast. Apologies abounded and claims the chef couldn't handle so many people.
A poor experience, which is a shame because the Jorvik is in quite a good location - just a few minutes through the park gates opposite and you're in the centre. Alternatively, a slightly longer walk around the city wall and you pass some good pubs and restaurants.
Better management and much improved organisation are needed to be able to claim a 4-star establishment ... way way short at the moment.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Jorvik Hotel and we were extremely disappointed by our room. The hotel is described as undergoing refurbishment to set it as a 4star luxury establishment - yet there was nothing luxury about our stay!

We booked and paid for a superior double room and it was not. On the email confirmation that we received from the hotel it even says - Room Type: Deluxe Double Room. Room 19 is not a deluxe room.

We arrived around 3pm on Saturday afternoon and after being shown to our room we went back to the reception desk and told the receptionist that our bedside lights and the light above the dressing table did not work. She offered us a lamp instead! I also mentioned that there were dead flies in our room, she said that she would notify housekeeping. When we came back 3 hours later the room was the same - it had not been cleaned.

On our way out that night we mentioned it again - still nothing was done.

Our room was dirty. Dead flies on the window ledge and others flying around, cigarette ash on the floor under the bedside table, a dead woodlice in our bathroom, a dead spider on the ceiling near the door and a TV in the wardrobe instead of being plugged in and on show in the room!!!

The Manager was not available to speak to but the girl on reception (utterly useless) offered me a voucher for 50% off our next stay! I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me!!! The 'eventual' refund of £20 is not acceptable.

We paid £95 for a superior room and it was dirty, the lights didn't work and there were dead insects in our room. When we raised these issues we were told housekeeping did not have time to come and clean our room - what kind of '4star' treatment is that? The booking confirmation email states that "The Jorvik Hotel offers an unparalleled level of service to make our guest's stay comfortable" - The room should not have been found in that state and when we raised the issue that it was unclean - something should have been done immediately, the fact that nothing was done at all means they are falsely advertising the hotel to customers.

We had friends staying at a hotel close by - The Royal York Hotel. They paid the same amount for their room but it was beautiful - it was also clean - which is what you expect from a hotel room. (this hotel doesn't offer one night stays but if you get a late booking it will)

Please see photo's of how we found our room when we checked in and also how it was left when we checked out the following day!

I wish we had read the previous reviews before we booked but we didn't! Please don't make the same mistake as us!

Awful Hotel and it will never be 4*!

We stayed at the Yorvik earlier in the year. Here are our reflections and opinions.

Beautiful little brochure and website ... horrible experience.

The room had been redecorated but the bathroom didn't function (no hot water), the telephone was not connected, the sheets and duvet were dirty ... and this was the second room we were offered, as the first was so dark and small with the bathroom door opening onto the wc ... I mean, literally, banged onto the toilet ... so small, I could not have got in to the bathroom without a struggle.

To get to the 2nd room we had to walk through a building site with bare exposed wires, dust and corridors in a poor state of repair.

The breakfast provided was made up of the cheapest of everything and frankly was nasty. Whereas the single person running the restaurant for breakfast was a pleasant, keen to help chap, other staff at front of house were rude, unpleasant and off hand.
The manager did give us a discount following my complaint, but I didn't feel that we were offered a fair reduction given that they had barely provided any service beyond a mattress and a 'dirty' duvet.

It felt like the hotel had run out of money for the refurbishments, with ultra modern bathrooms that don't work and phones which have as yet to be connected ... a surreal experience but not one I would recommend.

Centrally placed in a wonderful location, close to the river and the Museum Gardens, but don't go to the Yorvik ... go somewhere else and walk a little further.

Me and my boyfriend chose this hotel as website made the deluxe room sound really nice but in reality it wasnt.
Many items declared on website for the superior room were absent and we chose to stay at this hotel for these reasons.
No plasma TV with DVD and freeview, no heated mirrors or towel rails, no plug for the jacuzzi bath and the room had not been thoroughly cleaned from previous occupants.
Room had been recently refurbished recently but not to a high standard and the breakfast was small and greasy.

what i hoped to be a much needed romantic get away was spoiled by the poor hotel.

i shall not be staying here again

We had high hopes for the hotel because of the photographs on the website, but be warned - they are nothing like the run-down, out of date Fawlty Towers reality! On arrival it took more than two hours for our room to be ready. The telly was not tuned in properly, the coffee machine did not work, the bathroom light flickered, there was scum in the bottom of the bathroom glasses, there was mould in the shower, the bathroom doorhandle was broken and there were horrible black stains on the ageing carpet beside the bed. Radio 1 plays constantly in public rooms. In the morning all this was topped off by there being no hot water from taps or shower and we were not given the breakfast we had asked for. To her credit the Manageress did not quipple, and agreed to drop £25 from our bill with a look of resignation suggesting that she had to do this a lot. The other staff were pleasant if not totally competent. Overall it is grotty, outdated, depressing and to be avoided at all costs!

Utterly dire hotel. The refurb has been designed to pack in guests like sardines, with zero thought to our comfort. Horribly oppresive, dark, tiny room they gave us - calling it a 'Deluxe'. At check-out, I listed 18 reasons why it wasn't (including exposed electrical wiring) and was given a miserly £20 refund. One to avoid.
