Yes ok it's a bit stinky but The experts there are just that, experts, very knowledgeable and happy to talk to you. The exhibits are not dry at all but varied and interactive.
We learned a lot and really enjoyed a couple of hours here.

You'll spend 1/2- 1hr here at most. Informative displays but very busy. Not worth the entrance fee. Also found the place dark so struggled to read some displays

Thankfully only had to wait a few minutes in the sun outside the entrance during this heatwave! Entrance fee a little pricey at 9.75, however difficult to quibble as this is clearly an historic site of national/international importance. Also your ticket allows to return within 12 months for another visit. Entrance staff very keen to sell guide books etc which to be honest are not needed as everything you see is well described. The ride through a viking village is well done and the staff on hand are all very knowledgable and willing to answer questions. Would recommend especially for schoolkids who will love the skeletons on show.

not really all it was cracked up to be, but for those who are not teachers who teach the Vikings it is probably plenty of information in a small space. This really only takes about 30 minutes to go through but is probably enough for the uninitiated. Cute 'gondola' ride.

Loved this place, would recommend it to anyone. Wasn't cheap to get in is my only criticism but in fairness to them the ride makes it worthwhile and a great deal of effort clearly put into the exhibitions. If you visit York, Jorvik is a must.
