“Spectacular Remains”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

The ruins of this Benedictine abbey show the extraordinary structure it once was in the 11th century as the wealthiest.and most powerful church in the north of England. Situated in beautiful gardens, it's a peaceful, endearing place that leads to more amazing historical sites. A gorgeous place to visit.

“History in the park”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

An amazing piece of history yours for the browsing. The sheer size of the beautiful building is hard to imagine, but posted placards identify the locations of parts of the abbey long gone. It was a lovely spring afternoon on our visit and lots of folks were resting and basking among the ruins.

“Abbey ruins in attractive park setting”
Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

There aren't many ruins left but it was interesting to us since we had already been to Fountains Abbey established by 13 monks who had become disenchanted with the extravagant behavior of the abbots of St. Mary's. It's located on a peaceful setting by the river and apparently hosts occasional outdoor theatre and medieval York Mystery plays every three years.

“Amazing Place to Photograph”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

The Abbey is right in the area where the park is and the Yorkshire museum. The ruins are beautiful and a great opportunity to take awesome pictures. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day!
