Good food served in the body of a former church. Always busy. Has canteen-like service but I've eaten there many times and enjoyed it. More appropriate for lunch whilst visiting York than a romantic evening meal though!

The Spurriergate centre contains a fairtrade cafe and shop inside the shell of a very beautiful church building. Both are OK but are poor in comparison to the other options in York and having shopped there, we left a bit aggreived.

The cakes are nice in the cafe but the coffee is weak and bland. We also bought a birthday card in the shop, but having got it home, we found a biblical verse printed inside (not ideal to give to a Sikh friend!) there was no hint on the front of the card that this would be included, and really, who reads the (very) small print on the back of greetings cards? I appreciate the building is/was a church, but surely everything sold there doesn't need to be Christian? We were attracted by the fairtrade credentials initially, but now will be unlikely to return as we feel that religion was a bit foisted upon us and we can easily buy fairtrade without this.

Overall, worth a look, but perhaps a bit too religious for some tastes.
