There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. “Cultural Feast”

We visited the York City Art Gallery again (one year on, from our last visit) and it exceeded our first impressions. Do you know, we hadn't realised (the first time) that it has galleries on TWO FLOORS ~ truly amazing! The art collection is fantastic and well worth seeing. LS Lowry, D Hockney, Picasso,Van Dyke to name just a few. The collection also includes contemporary artists (not just painters ~ sculptures, ceramics, bronzes, etc). We saw their "Art and Music" exhibition, which was great. Truly worth seeing ~ and it's free, although certainly worth making a small donation.

We live here in York. The Art Gallery is a worth 2 hours of your time while visiting The City. Handy for the City Walls, Museum Gardens and The Minster.

“A Bit of Culture!”

We visited on the spur of the moment and found we enjoyed more than expected. Particularly enjoyed the interactive exhibits so that children could feel and touch.

Lovely to wander around on a wet and dreary day and appreciate the great art work on the walls and teach the kids at the same time.

“Worth a "must do"!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

I ranked this along with Jorvik and a walk around the city walls as the most worthwhile experiences in York. Richly diverse art, nicely presented in a user friendly and relaxing environment with lots of comfortable places to sit. Wonderful that it is free as well.
