“It isn't what it used to be but getting you to York is the treat”

York Station is in a high spot above the town and across the river from the Shambles and the Cathedral. The toilets on the station used to be really good years ago but the last time I went they weren't' good. I am not a train buff but if you leave the station and head to the right you will reach the fabulous museum.

The building has a certain to charm to it - it is also ideally situated for a pleasant walk by the walls to any city centre location.

“Beautiful Grade II listed sandstone building with lovely wrought ironworks! Small but doesn't feel crowded!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

York Railway Station is small as major stations go but it is one of the most important stations on the British rail network due to its location and being a key juncture point roughly equidistant between London and Edinburgh.

The Station building (opened in 1877) is a Grade II listed building made of beautiful light sandstone with arched entryways and a wide bowstring truss roof spanning interior platforms. The roof features wide beams with patterned cut-outs. The station is filled with lovely old wrought iron works including capped central columns and decorative arches featuring shields and white York rosettes. The decorative ironwork is everywhere including handrails and featured most prominently on the stunning giant Clock and its support arm.

The station is bright and airy thanks to the glass roofs and there is a lot of open space so you’re not tripping over fellow commuters like at other major stations. There are a few places to purchase refreshments and shop so you can grab that Cornish pasty and a book for your train journey!

It was a pleasure waiting at this station which did not feel crowded at all despite its small size. The National Railway Museum is a short walk away and if you’re a train fanatic, you’ve just got to make time to stop to experience York’s Railway station and the Museum!

“So clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

Good rail station. Surprisingly very clean. It provides easy access to the railway museum. Many activities such as york dungeons can b accessed by walking or catching the sight seeing bus outside the rail station. Staff are friendly.
