“Beware the restaurant”
Reviewed 10 November 2011

Have stayed at the hotel many times and found it welcoming and friendly but on my latest stay I discovered that the restaurant has recentlyt been let to a new organisation although charges are put through the hotel.Beware! When I went to settle my bill I had been charged for a number of drinks which I had not ordered and upon investigation it was found that a false chitty had been recorded by staff at the restaurant and my sgnature had been forged

After reading other reviews before booking I expected much more from this Hotel. First appearences suggested a tired hotel which need a remake. Hotel room had an extremely poor shower over the bath and looked dated. It looked as though electricity cabling had been added later in untidy trunking. The bed was comfortable. Not great value .I would have to get a good deal to stay here again. An early night was impossible in our room as a rumbling noise made sleep difficult. The only saving grace was the breakfast choice Fish cakes and eggs benedict all nicely cooked. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The attractive garden area is worth a look where an outdoor pool sauna and steam room is situated.

Very friendly hotel with excellent breakfasts.
Only a 10min walk to the city walls.
Slightly expensive for what you get

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor have limited head room. Swimming poor is closed from the end of September

We stayed at the Mount Royale for three nights last week. From the moment we arrived to when we left the staff were excellent. Very friendly and could not do enough for you. We had a lovely suite on the first floor, pricey but worth it. This is not a "boutique" hotel so if that is what you like stay elsewhere. But if you want good old fashioned comfort, service and a fab breakfast this is the place to stay.
Our only slight downside was the evening meal. The bar and restaurant seem to be run by different people who had just taken over and seemed a bit like headless chickens running around! However when the food came is was very good and the Italian staff could not have been nicer and more apologetic. I wish them luck and am sure on a return visit it will be excellent.
As it is October the gardens were not at their best but would love to see it in the summer as there are lots of little hidden sections with seating.
Only ten minute walk into York - great location - plenty to see and do. We will definitely stay here again and thanks to the staff for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Our room was overlooking the garden - no traffic noise - could have been in the country!

The hotel is fantastic, 14 of us stayed for a hen night and the staff couldn't do enough for us. So friendly and helpful for example offering maps and recommendations, and looking after our bags when we arrived too early. It is in a great location, a 5 minute walk from the train station and 10 minute walk into the centre of York. The hotel itself is gorgeous, the rooms were brilliant and breakfast excellent. We are all pretty fussy (we all had requests e.g. I dont want my bacon crispy, I dont want this etc), however for the staff at breakfast nothing was too much trouble.

Some of us stayed for a spa day the next day and I would really recommend it. The treatments are heaven and good value, and there is a great outdoor hot tub, steam room and sauna and a coffee and tea room which I thought was a nice touch. The outdoor area is set in beautiful gardens and we had lunch included in the spa day offer at the 19 restaurant and it was great. Would definitely stay here again.
