Very pleased with the hotel and would like to stay again to enjoy the full facilities. Very comfy bed and helpful staff. The hotel decor itself is fabulous and quaint. Very enjoyable breakfast too. Thought £125 was steep at first but comparing this to your large mass hotels like the hilton I would much rather stay here.

As a smaller hotel we aim to provide a more personal, relaxed but still professional service where guests can make the most of their stay and feel happy and content on check-out.

I spent weeks reviewing hotels in York for our 22nd anniversary weekend break away and finally made a booking at the Mount Royal. What a fabulous time we had! Our executive double room excelled our expectations. Despite being downstairs in the hotel, our room was full of character and had both an adjacent bathroom and a seperate dressing room. Everything was clean and beautifully presented. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food served for breakfast as well as our evening meal was absolutely delicious. We even took advantage of the free DVD loan service run by reception. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and everyone had a smile! If we are ever in York again we wouldn't hesitate to rebook here.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are away from the main road, so quieter.

Many thanks for your wonderful comments and so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.
As a small independent hotel customer service and satisfaction is very high on our list of priorities and therefore positive and constructive feedback is always appreciated.
We look forward to welcoming you both back to the Mount Royale Hotel in the not so distant future.

PROS : Lovely pleasant and helpful staff. Great food served in really nice breakfast room and restaurant. |Good location and parking . Only a 10 minute walk to the city centre or frequent bus service from outside the hotel. Our room was great in that it had both a bedroom and a sitting room with a flat screen TV in each.

CONS; A tired hotel typical of family owned establishments. A hotel chain would close it down for 3 months and gut the whole building. Our bathroom had a BADLY cracked wash basin and the carpet in the other rooms was in desperate need of shampooing. The room was clean .as was the linen but vacuuming of both the room and the hallways was missing. Again typical of family run hotels where they are not prepared to pay for housekeeping supervision. The outside maintenance looked like the man was fighting a losing battle with extensive grounds and an old building to maintain

Did we have a good weekend ? Yes for the reasons stated in PROS.
Was it good value for Money? It may well be for York area pricing. But a few weeks ago we had a marvellous weekend at Weston Hotel Scarborough at 60% less than this hotel's prices

Thank you for your positive comments and constructive feedback and pleased to hear that you did, in part, have a good weekend. The hotel is a listed building dating back to the 1830's and therefore maintenance and upkeep of the property is on going, which I am sure you can appreciate, but this also adds to the unique and individual character of the hotel. The property has been owned by the same family for the last 47 years, and along with their dedicated team, including a head housekeeper, continues to provide a personal, yet professional service to all our visitors, a great many of which are returning guests. We hope you continue to visit the beautiful city of York and all the delights it has to offer

We went here after our bad experience with the Elmbank (see previous review ), this hotel is more expensive, but it was well worth it. It is a beautiful hotel with excellent staff. The rooms are very clean with crisp white linen. We did have a suite and the bed was enormous. We had a meal in the attached restaurant 'OXO'S and the food was very impressive. We had breakfast which was cooked to perfection. The staff are very attentive and caring without being invasive. I really love this hotel and cannot recommend it enough. So thank you to all members of staff both hotel and restaurant.

Room Tip: Just enjoy your stay.

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2013 as part of our Grand tour of the UK. This is a family run hotel and the people were just lovely, friendly and helpful. Our 'room' was actually a suite with 2 rooms ,lovely bathroom and a separate 'scullery' which held a fridge, the teamaking facilities and a large sink. It also had windows which opened which I like to have, and although it was facing on to a busy road it was quiet at night--I never closed the windows. The gardens are beautiful as are the swimming pool and hot tub. It is about 15 minutes walk to the city centre and we really enjoyed exploring york, found plenty to do. Also a nice trip to the coast,Scarborough, Whitby and Heartbeat country. We ate ther twice and the food was great, also breakfast was 'big'. Very enjoyable

Room Tip: I hear the rooms overlooking the garden are lovely but we were happy with ours.

We are an independent hotel, a little quirky and very individual, but we do try our best to provide guests with a level of service which is consistent, and of a personal yet professional manner, and are so pleased your stay with us was most enjoyable

Genuine friendly professional Yorkshire welcome on arrival with excellent information on what to see and where to go.

The hotel has character and all the traditional features and is a breath of fresh air from the modern chains we are forced to stay in these days.

Our room was huge and had the most comfortable bed Ive come across, it was situated at the front of the hotel so there was a slight hum from passing traffic but it was the constant ambulance sirens that drove us crazy windows open or closed. They seem to sound them regardless of traffic on the road or not, before 7am and well after midnight.

Breakfast was definately award winning and the tastiest Ive had in a long long time and the first time Ive had eggs benedict mmmmm and served with a genuine smile. We ate out as we wanted to see York at night so didn't experience the hotel restaurant however speaking to other guests in the bar we did miss out, perhaps next time.
I've overall rated our stay 5 star as it would be unfair to penalise the hotel for the 'look at me I can sound my siren emergency services' but it did spoil our tranquil stay.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the main road if youre not used to sirens.

We are a private independent hotel with a character that is both individual and a little quirky, but our commitment to good service and customer care is our greatest goal and we are therefore very appreciative of your lovely comments.
Sorry to hear that the local emergency vehicles disturbed your peace, but pleased to hear that the bed was comfortable and breakfast was enjoyed.
We hope you do come back and see us in the future, but this time not miss out on dining in our beautiful restaurant

The Mount Royale really grows on you as you gradually discover that it has lots to offer for a small hotel. Spacious quaint rooms, traditional furniture that is both good quality and very comfortable. Excellent breakfasts with a full menu of choices and no added supplements, my husband tried the smoked haddock, which he described as superb, then the next day the kippers, again he thought they were very good, while I went for the eggs benedict, already highly recommended by other reviewers, they were delicious, with a choice of ham, bacon or smoked haddock toppings, then our second morning I chose the full English (I rarely go for this option but when it is an award winning breakfast, it's a shame not to try it, there is even a vegetarian version, it was one of the tastiest I have had). The high standard of food continued at dinner in their Oxo restaurant, the seafood platter stole the show, but we were also impressed at the sophistication of all the meals on offer (we were half board), we rounded the evenings off with drinks in the cosy snug bar. There is a car park at the front and a decent size very pleasant and interesting garden at the rear which provides nice spots for alfresco drinks/snacks, plus a small heated pool, sauna and hot tub in a secluded area. If you add to this, very helpful, friendly staff and just a ten minute walk from the city, you can see why my title is "lots to offer".
