“Fabulous friendly staff, good food, lovely spa and great value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2010

My friend and I booked in for a Sunday night we got a winter spa break deal which included dinner, bed and breakfast and use of the spa and a 20 min treatment each for £155 all in (we paid £25 each to upgrade that to a 1 hour treatment each).

On arrival the staff were really friendly and informative about hotel, facilities and the surrounding area. We found we had also been given a graden view room as the hotel was quiet, the room was large, clean and fully equipped with flat screen TV, and tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc.

We had a great view of the garden which even in Winter looked well maintained.

Evening meal was delicious, we had plenty of choice on the deal we had booked and even got a free glass of wine. Staff were again polite and attentive. Also drinks are reasonable at the hotel bar.

We went out in the evening and it is a good 10-15 min walk into the centre but there was plenty of bars along the way and I needed the walk after a big meal.

At breakfast there is a huge choice available and it was again delicious and the waiter was lovely .

As for the spa my friend and I thought it was fantastic sat in the hot tub outside in the sunshine as it was a lovely day you are tucked away at the bottom of the garden and not overlooked you have a huge bathrobe to walk to and from your room and we didnt feel uncomfortable walking about.

We had two people for treatments Mary who was fantastic and gave me a lymph and drain masage (fabulous hangover cure and my skin looks great) and another lady who gave my friend a really relaxing hot stone massage.

Trying to arrange a big girly trip for the summer when the pool is open and maybe tie into the races.

Only thing I will say is take your flip flops I forgot mine and looked pretty comical in my heels and bathrobe!!!

We stayed at the Mount Royale hotel with friends for three nights. The best thing about the hotel was the breakfasts and dinners. Food very good but if you have a query on the restaurant bill in the morning when checking out, no-one from the restaurant is there to resolve the matter. The room was in definite need of renovation. The bathroom tongue and groove had been painted over and looked terrible. The bath was ancient. Windows needed painting and in need of work. We used the few tissues that were in the room and they were not replaced, neither were the toiletries that we used. There was no information folder in the room or any indication on how to ring reception, another room, etc. On our last night they were stopping serving dinner at 7.30pm so we went to a wonderful Italian in the city. York is beautiful and so much so see and do there but when we return we will not be staying at the Mount Royale. Our friends had the last suite available and it was superb. What difference from their room to ours!!!

10 minutes walk to the city wall...free parking...Huge garden rooms (well suites) huge breakfasts traditionally served and cooked to order. Kind attentive staff.
If you have lunch in One 19 make sure you are hungrey as the portions are large and the menu tradtional and unusual something for everyone. We dined overlooking a large lush garden which was so unexpected in the centre of this busy city.
If you fancy treating yourself visit the beauty salon and spa make sure you book in advance as we couldnt get in until late the last day they are kind and experienced and use amazing lotions and potions. We had a crazy time in the garden spa really enjoyed trotting down these little paths through trees and bushes to be surprised by a jacuzzi in the open and sauna /steam etc the pool was closed but hopefully we will return in the summer months to enjoy again. It was an amazing sensation to sit in a bubling hot tub with the sharp nippy air outside then dashing across to the sauna /steam suite then pottering down the garden again to enjoy a hot stone massage
If you do visit York get a number 7 bus to the designer outlet and take plastic well worth a visit. Also dont be put off by the ques at Bettys it dosnt take that long and it is a good chance to people watch. 2 hours by train from Kings x

Hotel staff very attentive had an excellent time. Spoke over the phone to arrange booking and was very impressed with the receptionist who dealt with my call. Myself and my husband each had a treatment in the spa which was very relaxing. Had a meal in the resteraunt (one 19 the mount) on the Saturday night it was delicious and was really impressed with the service. Breakfast was also very tasty with plenty of choice. I would definatley recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a comfortable relaxing break.

Excellent hotel with a lot of character. All the staff were very friendly and efficient. We had a complimentary upgrade to the suite so the room was excellent too. The breakfast was good also with plenty of choice. Good location (5-10 mins walk from centre).

breakfast is excellent as are the staff. Eaten in the resterant once, not a good experience so we eat in york centre.

Just returned from two nights in York. Hotel staff friendly, rooms clean, but dated. We had a large room with a small sitting room with a convertible bed for our kids. Walk to York city center about 10 minutes. Paid full price, which seemed a little high for the quality of room, but overall enjoyable stay. On site restaurant and bar were excellent.
