“When can we go back?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2010

Husband and I stayed here last year, and still reminisce with great pleasure. It is the only hotel I have ever stayed in which had a bed more comfortable than my own. The food in the restaurant was superb, especially the local lamb. And the breakfast...well, we have travelled a bit and this ranks as one of the best, and certainly the best in England, that we have had. It has plenty of character, as you would expect from an older building, but that it what gives it it's charm. Much better than a soul-less Travel Lodge. We would not hesitate to go back - in fact wish we had the time to!

We decided at the last minute on Saturday to take a trip to York and as we were riding into the city noticed this hotel. We called the hotel and were given a late deal on the room by the gent manning reception. Didn't ask for card details to hold the booking as he could tell I was in the middle of town and didn't want me to read details to him where anyone could hear - very thoughtful.
We'd gone to York on the motorbike and when we arrived, we were offerred the option of more secure parking at the back of the hotel. Any bikers out there will know what a comfort that is.
I've read what other reviewers have said about the rooms being dated but we could tell that quite a bit of effort had been put into redecorating the room we stayed in. You need to remember that this is a period building so anything too modern would be completely out of place. The room & furnishings were very clean and comfortable and of a good standard which is the main thing.
The hotel is conveniently placed a short walking distance from the city centre but considering the lovely gardens and peaceful nights sleep it is easy to think you are not that close.
We opted to eat in the restaurant at the hotel that night and the food & service were top notch. The breakfast was also very good and I was most impressed with the choice. In most places it's either cereal or a fry up but here we had the choice of eggs benedict, smoked haddock or kippers (amongst other things) as well.
We were treated very well by all of the staff we encountered; they really went the extra mile to make sure we were happy.
We were so happy in fact, we actually booked there & then to stay again later in the year

Our trip to beautiful york was for a friends wedding,we travelled up from dover kent, and on arrival at the Ibis hotel our "booked hotel" was told our booking had been declined. We were given no reason for this and at 10.30pm were not happy to be given this information.finally about 11.30pm our friends managed to find us a room which was at the mount royale hotel. When we got there the staff could not have been more welcoming and friendly which they proceeded to be for the duration of our stay.
I do hope the manager appreciates the excellent customer service in which his staff provide well done xxxxx

The garden suites and the gardens are quite lovely. We had a very pleasant time. The rooms in the main building were less comfortable as the building does not have A/C.
The staff at morning breakfast was very quick and reliable with the breakfast offerings.
The dinner restaurant in the other building has a wide ranging menu. The appetizers were the best; while the staff was very flexible in customizing the mains to our liking.

i feel compelled to respond to the lady from swansea who stayed at the hotel accompaning her partner as he attended a course.
I was the organiser of that course and as such would like to put forward an overall view regarding the venue.
I totally accept that the lady who made those comments is entitled to her opinion and in no way do i detract from that.
I had 13 colleagues staying at the hotel for a period of three nights, the only complaint i received was that some of the rooms were hot albeit it was a scorching week.
I received praise regarding the food especially the breakfast,if there is a better breakfast in Yorkshire please do not hesitate to advise me.The staff were in my opinion and the vast majority of my colleagues were excellent.
Due to overbookings (my mistake) the reception staff were able to quickly resolve the situation in a friendly and good natured manner.
The hotel is unique and quirky but that adds to its charm, as you would expect in York..
I have stayed there on a number of occasions both personal and business and will continue to do so in the future.

Arrived at this hotel with my partner. He was on a course and i was accompaning him as i wanted to see York.
On arrival there was a mix up with the booking. The receptonist as not at all helpful and in fact came across as quite rude.Eventually this was sorted and we were given room 11.No thanks to the receptionist!!!
This room was a nice size with a four poster bed and a sofa.Bath and shower.
However the room was very dated and painted a dreadful colour. The soft furnishings need repacing. The bed was most uncomfortable with a poor mattress and it squeaked. The lighting in this room was enadequate to say the least. There was no dressing table with facilities for drying your hair etc. There was no fridge available and as the weather was very hot would of been a bonus. The shower was very difficult to operate.Carpet was not Vacumed Floor and skirting boards in bathroon stained..We ensured we made the room secure when we left it but on returning the cleaner had left the windows open !Also one evening we popped downstairs and left the TV on when we returned someone had been in our room and turned the tv off!!! There was no fan available and the room was unbearably hot and stuffy. There was what seemed like a kitchen fan/vent ouside our window which made a noise and ommited a terrible cooking smell.
The grounds were pleasant although the garden furniture needs painting and the small pool had flies floating in it.
There is a cat in the grounds and also a dog in the pool area .No good if you dont like pets!
!.Dinner at the restaurant joing the hotel was vey poor on both nights. The second night my partner choose calfs liver which was accompanied by Yorkshire pudding ,you would expect this to be excellent being in Yorkshire. Not the case it was served with two of the smallest ,i think frozen Yorshire puds.Very poor:( Breakfast was good although on two mornings we were kept waiting for a table. Not enough tables for Guests.
The area is ok although some rooad noise.Easy walking distance to railway station and city centre.
York is a fab city and i enjoyed all it had to offer.
Hotel receptionist again not very forthcoming with local info.

We stayed two nights in June and quite liked this place. It is very cental and a short walk down to the city centre. The staff were very friendly and treated us well. The room we had was down a flight of narrow stairs which could be dangerous if one slipped! The room was below ground level but very spacious with a big bathroom. It was good enough for us to stay the next night also!
The hotel has a bar and restauant which appeared to be sub let. Both were good.
Breakfast was excellent and the service by the staff outstanding. The car parking arrangements were very cramped and difficult.
We liked the Mount Royal and would think that most people would. Its a great little place to stay.
