Mount Royale Hotel & Spa
Ranked #5 of 47 Hotels in York
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 January 2011

If traveling to York and you don't want the sterility of a hotel chain, check out The Mount Royale. So friendly, from the welcome to the departure this hotel restores your faith in quality service. Full of nooks and crannies, wibbly wobbly floors, it is a building of character. We used the steam room, the hot tub and the restaurant, all were excellent. We even had a glass of pink bubbly delivered whilst in the hot tub. A very relaxing stay, and we'd go back again. Just a short walk to the city walls, right by the racecourse.

Stayed at Mount Royale for special birthday with husband and friends all hotel staff were really friendly and helpful, receptionist ordered flowers for me on my friend's behalf which were gorgeous, we were upgraded to a garden room which was very spacious. Breakfast was fantastic and we ate in the hotel restaurant both nights food was great, very attentive staff both at breakfast and in restaurant.

I treated my partner for his 33rd Birthday to this hotel, having just found it searching for hotels in York. The website said minimum of 2 night stay but I called them and they said 1 night was fine. I booked us into a standard double room, bed and breakfast. The lady on reception asked if it was a special occasion. She said on the day we checked in they would put a note on our reservation to upgrade our room free of charge if there was availability. We arrived at the train station and jumped in a taxi having thought it may be a bit of a distance, however the taxi journey lasted less than 5 minutes!! When we arrived at the hotel we were like "wow". It ooozes charm and history. We were swiftly checked in by the polite receptionist and shown around the hotel. We then went to the room and was upgraded to a HUGE four poster room with views over the garden, massive bathroom and lounge area. We then had a look around the hotel ourselves and were amazed at the gardens. It is literally like a secret garden which goes on and on and on. The sauna, hot tub etc was located at the bottom of the garden. We had a leisurely drink in the bar which had a proper log fire which was a nice touch. We could have stayed there all day! We decided not to eat at the hotel (the restaurant is a seperate business) as we wanted to venture into York for the evening, but it looked really nice and was very busy with regulars whom we were talking to and highly recommended it. The next day we got up for breakfast and there is only one thing I can say. WOW!!! We have never seen such a large spread put on! We were shown to our own table in the breakfast lounge where there were fruit, yoghuts, fresh bread, cereals, eggs, juices, cheese etc ets. On the table there was a seperate hot menu from which we could choose. There was a choice of full english, eggs benedict, smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes, all types of eggs, scrambled, poached etc etc, kippers. We decided to go for a full english to set us up for the day and set us up it did! It was lovely. Later in the morning we ventured into York to walk off the breakfast! and it is less than a 5 minute walk away on a straight road down. I had prebooked us for half a spa day at the hotel (called "Bodytonix") ran separately from the hotel. We were checked in by the salon owner with our timetable and given a meal list from the restaurant in the hotel (as lunch and a glass of wine was included in our package). We both went for chicken breast wrapped in parma ham with vegetables and it was lovely. We then proceeded to use the hot tub, sauna etc which we got to ourselves! We then had an hours treatment each (volcanic indulgence) which is a hot stone massage. I can honestly say this was the best massage I had ever had and my partner said the same. It was that relaxing that we both fell asleep during it!! All in all, we were very sad to leave the hotel. Everything, from the staff who were so polite, the food, the service, the accommodation, the spa, everything was top notch and we have said when we next visit York we would not want to go anywhere else but the Mount Royale Hotel. A hidden gem!!

The hotel was likeable. In need of updating, but the lack of modernity is part of its charm. Breakfast was superb, and the staff friendly. We were on a two night deal. Friday nights food was good, but the service was slow. Saturday night was a complete shambles. From the start, the staff were clearly struggling to keep up. A large party had been booked in and this left everyone else waiting. Our table was booked for 8.00 and it was 9.20 before we were served food and then our main course(fillet steak) was spoiled, and no replacement available. Several groups gave up and left, never having placed an order.
I wanted to like this hotel, and it was just the restaurant that let it down, but that is such a critical failing that I will not be returning and could not recommend it.

A wonderful building filled with character! Only stayed one night and day so didn't use spa etc.
The staff were SO helpful and did all they could to ensure our stay was good. Hotels a 20min walk from town and in a great location
We stayed in room 19 the suite which i would reccommend. Very big with large bed, chairs and TV in bedroom. Then small sitting area and a lovely big modern bathroom.
Due to mix up we also got a chance to look at rm 11 the 4 poster room- same price but not as nice- quite dark with old fashioned decor and dark bathroom.
