Owner description: No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

I love York for it's history and it's general ambience, not to mention all of the excellent pubs and restaurants. I visit at least four times a year and always take a walk around the walls just to see what's going on. It provides a fascinating insight to one of Britain's most beautiful cities.
Downsides? It isn't wheelchair friendly, though you could probably get away with a buggy if there was someone to help you with the stairs. Also, toddlers would need close supervision as there are a few plummets of up to 20 feet but, if you are reasonably fit, it's a great way to work up a thirst!

The walks with a few breaks enable you to encompass the city. Lots of interesting facts and history displayed on the boards adjacent to each of the steps.

Lots of photo opportunities, either of the views of the city, or of family on the walls. Some parts can be narrow, usually the steps on or off, but me and my husband, quite comfortably walked round for the most, side by side. It's free and you do feel away from the hustle and bustle of a city. Anyway, who doesn't love walking on a wall and this is one where your mum won't tell you to get down!

Nothing special. Wish people in York would pick up their dog's poop. Narrow passages, people leave their garbage on the ground.
