I love York for it's history and it's general ambience, not to mention all of the excellent pubs and restaurants. I visit at least four times a year and always take a walk around the walls just to see what's going on. It provides a fascinating insight to one of Britain's most beautiful cities.
Downsides? It isn't wheelchair friendly, though you could probably get away with a buggy if there was someone to help you with the stairs. Also, toddlers would need close supervision as there are a few plummets of up to 20 feet but, if you are reasonably fit, it's a great way to work up a thirst!
