I’m not sure how exactly one rates city walls. I found myself strolling atop them courtesy of York’s free walking tour on a beautiful Summer day. The York city walls are very well maintained and the walkway along them is easy to navigate, with a metal safety railing on the inside. Definitely not wheelchair accessible, though, and there are some stairs (though not a huge number) to climb to get onto the wall walkway. The views from the walls are quite nice, especially those of the York Minster and supporting buildings. It was fun to lean out through one of the crenels (gaps in the wall) and imagine a horde of attacking soldiers being repulsed by defenders. At some gates you can see a portculis (drop-down spiked barrier). The walls are an easy, free, and historic site, so do visit them if you have time.
