Review of Holy Trinity Church

Owner description: Holy Trinity Goodramgate has the air of a hidden treasure. It stands in a small, secluded, leafy churchyard, with the Minster towering behind, tucked away behind Goodramgate - one of York's busiest shopping streets. To visit, you pass through an 18th-century archway tacked on to buildings that served as artisans' workshops in the 14th century. The church itself is full of character. The floors and arcades are charmingly uneven. Light filters through the windows, illuminating honey-coloured stone. The east window especially has marvellous stained glass that was donated in the early 1470s by the Reverend John Walker, rector of the church. On sunny days, transient gems of coloured light are scattered on the walls, and various Medieval faces stare out from the windows.

it is a little gem in York, beautiful inside but even better outside – very peaceful and quaint, with a nice whether you can grab a packed lunch and go there to have a bit of break from busy York streets

“Interesting with great staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

We popped into this church on our way to the shopping area and what a nice surprise to find friendly staff who were keen to explain the history of this unusual monument.

We'd never seen box pews before and apparently, not many are left. They looked a bit creepy to us, but apparently in the 15th century, they were quite common and families rented them.

In those days, churches were about the prayers and listening, not about the preachers, so the pews didn't have to face front.

We learned a bit and we saw a lot. Thanks for the information Andrew.

“I've never seen a church like this one”

The laminate handout will guide you through this small but historic sight. The box pews are what makes this place so special. The seating was rented by the parishioners to attend the service. I'd never seen this before, and appreciated the attendant willingness to share her knowledge

“Definitely make a point to find this”

This church has seen and change a lot in its 800 year history. Very knowledgable and dedicated docents, ask them questions. Make a point to find this.

“Snuggled away down an alley”

Quaint old church. Very peaceful. I sometimes go in there to have a quiet moment.
The grounds are sweet & old too.
Sometimes they have Birds of Prey displays in the grounds.
A hidden gem :)
