We decided to eat at the Golden Fleece based on previous experience and was glad to see that, by and large, the experience was a good one.

As we didn't want a heavy meal, we all decided to have the hot beef baguette with chips. We weren't prepared for the size of the baguette or the portion of chips, both of which was more than generous.

The majority of the staff were friendly and efficient in the restaurant area. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the gentleman who was hosting the front bar and who came across as a bit grumpy when he greeted myself and my family.

Given the pub's reputation as being the most haunted in York, the rooms are in keeping with that reputation. The downside though is that the dim lighting isn't helpful for people with eyesight difficulties.

Despite these issues, the Golden Fleece is great value for money, especially as it's in the middle of the tourist district of York.

Not eaten here for a few years so decided to try lunch when I was in York. Went for the steak pie and i have had better steak pie in a hospital canteen. The pie was smothered in gravy which we realise was to hide the pie once we tucked in. Crust was burnt. Meat in side was dry and burnt. Really chewy. Not nice at all. Staff don't check how your food is and they weren't really about to approach so just ended up leaving good. Not value for money at all and wouldn't return

Recently stayed at the Golden Fleece, Very quaint and loads of history. Stayed in the most haunted room, again quaint and the beds were very comfortable. Stayed in for the evening meal after seeing other peoples being brought out. Very rarely now days do you get real home made food that is not just from the wholesaler and just heated up.. The food here was truly home made, we had Chicken Pie and Steak and Blue Cheese with fresh vegetables. Very tasty and portions did not leave us want desert.

The Price included a full English breakfast, We were offered small or large at no extra cost. The large is very large and again we didn't need to eat until evening.

The aspect that made our stay even better was the staff. All without exception took to the time talk and played the role of city guide when asked about there options of places to visit etc. Being a haunted Hotel, they all again spoke about history and story's of past goings on at the Golden Fleece. (which all matched, so must be true)

Only negative, the hotel is full of history and character, but that doesn't mean you need to leave all the dust laying around. A little spring clean in the hard to reach areas would not go a miss.

If your looking for 4 star comfort, this is not the hotel for you. however if you want good honest food with excellent hosts, you can't go wrong.

Room Tip: The Shambles room had Four Poster and Roll Top Bath

We visited the fleece after having a disappointing experience at another pub. Didn't eat, but enjoyed the drinks and service. A very old fashioned pub, but was very busy for a Sunday afternoon. Will eat here next time we're in York.

The food here is incredible. My partner and I both opted for mushroom soup as a starter. It was faultless. Proper homemade soup. For main course I opted for steak pie and my partner the beef and Yorkshire pudding. Both were lovely but we could not finish them. Will definitely return but will not be having starters. The staff are friendly and especially loved the gentleman at the end of the bar in the back room. The locals are very friendly too, one guy spoke to us at length about the ghosts that haunt the pub. The best pub we've visited during our stay. Will definitely come back

My Husband, his Brother, and my sister in law spent a memorable Saturday night having a relaxing drink and catch up at the Golden Fleece. There are a fantastic selection of ales available. Staff are super friendly and love to tell you about the ghostly things that have happened to them in this lovely pub. Will be back to stay next time.

Had an excellent evening in the Golden Fleece, great service and fantastic atmosphere. John the owner delivered over and above to ensure my wife and I had a great 2nd wedding anniversary in York. A great pub, with a great history.
