“Good location, free parking...awful food!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2011

Stayed one night here for shopping trip in York, excellent location, only 10 mins from MacArthur Glenn outlet centre which is well worth a trip. Large free car park at hotel so we left the car and took bus from just outside hotel gates into York centre which was ideal...do not attempt to drive into the city centre.
Booked 'deluxe' room which was OK but quite small with ripped dirty carpet hidden under a footstool.
Made a huge mistake and had dinner in the hotel restaurant...AVOID! Staff are lovely but food awful. Had a rack of ribs which was grey, tough and inedible served with cold chips (£11.00) and my husband had lukewarm fish and chips. The restaurant is cold and soulless and we really regretted not going out.
Breakfast OK but all danish pastries etc gone by 10am and breakfast served til 11am on Saturdays.
Basically, you get what you pay for...cost £79.00 for night plus breakfast so can't really complain.
Ideal location as quiet with free parking but DEFINITELY do not have dinner here!

Found all the staff helpful and happy to go out of their way.

The hotel is a short taxi ride from the centre of town, but quiet and spacious because of that. Would be amazing for any race day as right behind the course.

My fiance and I stayed here this weekend for 1 night for our anniversary, it was perfect! Most hotels and Guest houses require a minimum of 2 nights in York which was really inconveniant for us, the Holiday inn let us book 1 night and although it was an advance reg purchase we got free parking and breakfast included!
There is a lovely country pub across the road called Fox & Roman and the hotel is easy walking distance to city centre, took us about 25 mins to walk. Taxis to and from the city were about £5 each way. A good taxi company was Speedway 01904 656565.

Breakfast at the hotel was a choice or cereals, toast, fruit and fried items and they serve until 11am. Staff were friendly and although the rooms were nothing special they were clean and comfortable which is perfect as you are out and out all day anyway. I would defo recommend and visit again.

Stayed here while visiting York on holiday. Outside the 60's concrete appearance doesn't fill you with too much confidence, however the other reviews are right when they say that you forget about it once inside! Can't comment on the food as we ate out, however the rooms were of a good size and the bed comfortable for a quiet nights sleep. Negatives? The lack of modern LCD TV - a CRT with poor resolution is all you get, and the bathrooms, and indeed rooms, though perfectly clean and functional, are starting to show their age. However, I'd stay again - car parking is good, and access to the city centre is easy. It's a 20-25 min walk straight up Tadcaster Road or an 8 min bus ride from the nearby bus stop. Certainly book early to get to get the lowest price as it's not worth paying top dollar for.

We took a chance and booked this hotel being a mystery. We needn't have worried it turned out to be very good . From the excellent accommodation to the delicious breakfast and all for the princely sum of £59 per room. The location is approximately 2 miles from the city centre ,this might give problems to people with walking difficulties but there is a very good bus service and of course taxis.

This is a standard UK Holiday Inn in one of their old buildings so if you have stayed in these round the North of England, you know what to expect from the rooms and facilities.

The only difference here is that the staff service is one of the best experienced it was natural and willing and did not feel they were akward, or were false in trying to provide the excellent level of customer service.

We travelled by train from elsewhere in the UK, and the public transport links trainstation, hotel and city centre are fast efficent and good value for money.

I will admit that my 3 night stay was free, on room only, due to redemption of free nights being a member of the Hoilday inn loyalty club,This can work for or against you with the staff but this was not the case here .

The value score comes only from the paid dining experience with was pretty bad. Service was fine, but Food quality was poor with no taste vastly over priced for what you are getting, our dishes we supposed to be spicy ( Harissa chicken not a hint of Harissa, not even a hint of chicken taste)quite greasy in parts. so much so that we did not want to pay for breakfast in the hotel and sought out meals in the city.
My wife now understands why I regularly complain about Hotel food!

A good enough hotel to visit York and surrounding attractions, If you want Luxury go elsewhere, but certainly go elsewhere to eat.

some sharp practices by staff ! Goods are charged to your room without your permission (or being signed for) and then payment is demanded. Very lucrative way of staff boosting sales especially bar goods.

Overall mega expensive.

Poor quality childrens meals - now I know why they are free!

This hotel badly lets down the chain.
