After cycling the short distance from Naburn Lock, we stopped here for lunch.
We both had the cheese and onion bloomer and it came with plenty of crisps and a lovely side salad. We had tea and coffee at reasonable prices and felt that it was good value for money.
The pub was fairly busy and were advising folks to book for evening meals. Atmosphere was friendly and staff were very polite an welcoming. Did not stay in a room.

We were all looking forward 2 our Sunday lunch but were sadly disappointed, not value for money. The portion sizes were small, not enough for me even though I only eat small portions anyway. The yorkshire pudding, pork & gravy were not too bad. The beef was okay as well. However the vegetables were mixed together in a dish and not enough for 6 of us. The tablespoon of mash potato , seasoned with pepper may have been the real thing but it is came across as packet mash. We were not asked if meal was okay middle or end if the meal. We wished we had read the reviews before we went and would not eat here again unless standards improved.

Having visited this pub last weekend, I feel I have to disagree with some of the previous comments that have been made. We visited for the first time on Friday, as we were staying on the near by camp site, we understood that it is under new ownership, and have to stay that the staff could have not be more accommodating and the food was extremely nice. I had the steak and ale pie which was lovely and tender and my husband had the burger. We liked the idea that the boys could have half portions of the full menu.We could not fault it. We had this, then enjoyed a couple of drinks whilst watching the children play on the play area. A truly delightful setting. Would love to return one day

We've eaten here many times in the past and all I want to say is, although the location is still beautiful, the quality of the food has gone right down hill. It's now cheap pub food and the emphasis seems to be on presenting it in an unnecessarily fancy way when there's no quality to it. It's like they're trying to disguise the cheapness.
A return to simple, home cooked good quality food would be better than this Frankie and Bennys type stuff. Horrible and disappointing.

We and another couple booked three rooms between us here for after a party at a friends house nearby on the 22nd June. I tried to ring the night before and got no answer but as when I had stayed there previously it had been busy thought that at 8 pm on a Friday night night maybe they just weren't getting chance to pick up.

So the next day when the other couple arrive at the friends house to tell us that The Ship is boarded up with to let signs outside we were a little confused.

None of us had had any communication to tell us that it was closed, there was no message on the phone, nothing. Just no where to stay on a Saturday night in June just outside York. Now we were lucky in that the other couple (with a five year old boy) could stay with friends in Leeds and we (who had booked two rooms) could stay with the friends having the party but everywhere else was fully booked up for the night and it could easily have been a complete disaster.

Also the website is still up and running and doesn't mention this.

On Tuesday 14th May we booked a meal for three for Thursday 16th May which included our telephone number - as York Races were on we knew restaurants nearer the city would be busy. We duly arrived at 7pm only to find the place apparently closed and were advised that we would have to go somewhere else as they had no electricity, we therefore had to start searching for another restaurant fortunately we were welcomed at the Shoulder of Mutton at Appleton Roebuck.
Seems as though the staff cannot be bothered to do their job, they had our telephone number why could they not advise us - will not be booking there again and would not recommend to anyone.
