“Good but overpriced...”
Review of Yorkshire Wheel - CLOSED

Reviewed 1 September 2013

We visited on a recent holiday in York. Having been on the London Eye a number of times, we were interested to see how this compares. Unfortunately, not very well. If you want a detailed view of York railway station, then this is for you. THe main problem, apart from the price, is where it is situated. Currently in the front garden of a hotel, until mid September when it will be packed away and be gone. Had this been more central to the historic city of York, then you may have been able to see something worthwhile, as it was, it was merely a overpriced fairground ride.

Seems silly making a comment for future customers but avoid in the wind as it feels rather dodgy up the top. Actually, avoid in the sun too as it only makes more money for the Dubai based owners.

My Wife, Son and I decided to go on this whilst visiting York last week. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gave an excellent view over the City. The Staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful. We were very disappointed to hear that the Wheel is closing in September as it appears residents in some so-called 'exclusive' Flats some distance away have complained that their privacy is being infringed believing that riders on the wheel may be looking into their property - Balderdash ! This is a Great Feature in the City and they should not be made to close it due to a few complaints from a rich minority but that's U.K. Democracy for you !

We opted for the hop on bus and wheel tour package. The queue was rather large at lunch time but it was quickly moved along. We ended up having a pod to ourselves and the views were great. You only get about 4 complete revolutions before it’s all over which last around 15 minutes. There is an option for a photograph but we just politely told the female photographer no thank you.

The Yorkshire Wheel is a scaled down London Eye, only 60 metres tall. It is situated in the grounds of a hotel on a temporary basis and I understand only until 13th Sept 2013 when it will be dismantled.
The ride itself is perfectly good, but even at its highest point you have a good view of the railway station, the river and across the old York Wall the Minster. There is nothing else that captures the imagination on the skyline. The wheel rotated 4 times, but the commentary only lasts two. I suspect the extra two revolutions give the photographer the extra time to get the expensive souvenir packs ready for departing guests. Better located, this would be more interesting.

This was fine, from a distance thought it was similar to the London eye. Not such a smooth ride, as the wind was blowing and the cabin (if that is what you call it) was moving a little! Saying all that the views were stunning and you can see for miles on a clear day. Yes I would recommend, not great for those who do not like heights!!
