“If you want a good chocolate factory, visit cadburys world!! Do not go here!”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

Okay so as a new attraction, we thought this would be something good. As chocolate lovers we saw this advertised online and thought we would give it a go and at £10, it seemed like a pretty good price.

On arrival, you're taken up to a lift to a woman and you get to try one square of chocolate, half a mini pot of chocolate chilli water, one quality street and another small chocolate. The tour lasts about 20 minutes and there are some interactive stands on the top floor.

There is a cafe downstairs and a gift shop, and that is all.

I have been cadburys world and it is the same price, you get to see everything being made there. It's a proper factory, this is a disgrace to the city of York. Do not visit here! Pay extra, drive to Birmingham and visit a proper chocolate factory!!

I cannot see this attraction being open for that much longer!

Hi Tamsynx, thank you for getting in touch with us – it’s important for us to hear what our guests have to say.

We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed and feel it appropriate to respond. We are not based at a chocolate factory and we do not claim to be a ‘proper’ factory, today access to most food manufacturing sites is extremely limited due to food hygiene laws and much of the manufacturing process is done with closed machines where you cannot view the mechanism. Regarding pricing admission to Cadbury World is almost 50% more (£14.75 for an adult) than our attraction and we realise that it offers its visitors a quite different experience.

When designing our attraction we did not want to simply replicate another attraction, such as Cadbury World. Instead we have chosen to create a visually engaging and vibrant interpretation of York’s chocolate story, which conveys an appreciation of chocolate through a guided tour and chocolate live chocolate making demonstrations. We are sorry that this did not meet with your expectations and thank you for your feedback.

“Poor value for money”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

Arriving excited to see the brand new experience York has to offer. Upon arrival I was surprised to find that they wanted £10 per adult. None the less we paid (4 adults - £40) to enter as surely it would be good value. After having to wait 5 minutes once we had paid before we were taken up to the start of the attraction via lift.

Once inside we were greeted and had the history of chocolate in York explained to us, via interactive displays, which on the whole were interesting to watch. After 4 rooms and approx 20 mins - we were left by our host and sent down to the first floor where there were more displays in an open plan room and 2 chocolate makers who were demonstrating how to make chocolate this was good to watch but once they had finished it dawned on me that this was it. The whole chocolate experience was finished after 30 mins. Only to be extended if I paid more money to sit in the cafe on the ground floor.

Overall the attraction was a lot smaller and very disappointing. What you do get to see is good, just not enough of it to warrant the £10 per adult cost.

Hi Graham F,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave us your comments, feedback is always welcomed. I am disappointed to hear that your visit only lasted 30 minutes, most visitors tend to spend over an hour at the attraction – 25 minutes on the tour, then exploring the artefacts and interactives at their own pace followed by our live chocolate making demonstration.

We will ensure that our staff make every effort to point out the displays and exhibits on offer, as I feel you may have missed out on these by going straight to the chocolate making demonstration which is meant to be the finale of the experience. Once again thank you for bringing this to our attention as comments always help us to improve our guest experience.

“Brilliant new Attraction.”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

I was fortunate to visit this brand new attraction a week before it officially opens, (Having won a competition). It is located in King's Sq. close to the centre of York. It traces the history of chocolate making in York through Rowntrees Terrys and Cravens.

Excellent interactive displays and historic films. Chance to see how chocolate is made and taste the results!

Very good cafe on the ground floor. Overall an excellent addition to York's attractions.
