“Great location & modern”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

After searching for a hotel in York near the town centre I found a relatively good deal at the Travel lodge and was pleasantly surprised! I stayed for a full week during late November 2013 and the room was very clean and modern unlike the IBIS hotel which is nearby. A heater was provided in the room which I used on occasion and it certainly kept the room warm, bathroom facilities were very impressive (walk-in shower etc). The only disappointing factor was that the WIFI-FI wasn't free of charge, but other than that the location couldn't get any nearer town, just a walk over the bridge and your in the centre! About a 10 minute walk from the train station so very good for location. I see other people have complained about noise, the room I stayed in which faced onto the main road had double-glazed windows and let hardly any noise in whatsoever.

Room Tip: Room located above the shop on the corner was fine.

Stayed in many hotels of this type all over the country, but for the price with no parking facility it was below par even though the Travelodge website states that it has recently been updated, I would hate to see what it looked like beforehand. Travelodge could certainly take a leaf out of Premier Inn and Holiday Inn Express for the quality of their accommodation. The one plus point of this hotel is the location which is very central to everything you would need while staying in York. We would have had a good nights sleep but for one drunken woman screaming at someone in the middle of the night in the corridor.

I gave this hotel another go on the back of the refurbishment claims - never again.
Whilst the bathrooms had no facilities the shower obviously hadn't been done properly as water collected and remained in the tray over night. The room was still very sparsely decorated and the overall look of the hotel was very poor.
I'm not stopping here again

Good location with all shops and pubs couple of minutes walk. Ncp car park opposite which charge £17.90 for 24hrs but Travelodge validate the ticket so you get it for £10. Only problem is it doesn't work so you have to ring for help in the car park. The person behind me also had the same problem. The room was very clean with good shower and comfy bed. Noise was isolated from the street but had to fix the secondary glazing as it didn't have a handle on it. Biggest problem was the heating didn't work. Told reception and he said he would bring up a portable heater. He didn't. Told them again. Still didn't bring one up. On the third occasion I asked the receptionist got one from the room behind his desk a few feet away and handed one over. Why couldn't this have been done in the first place.
I would advise against the buffet breakfast. It's £7.50 each and the choice of cooked food is very limited. I managed to get the room for £30 which is great value. Its just a shame about the heating problem.

Room Tip: Our room was opposite a nightclub. Not too noisy as its on the third floor but if its a concern ther...

I stayed in and was up most of the night up till 4.30AM with rowdy noisy revellers passing in the streets. The second time they had got the booking all fouled up and asked me to walk to the other Travelodge 7 minutes away.. with two large bags.. I mean come on.. I was offered a free breakfast box of gerbil food an apology for clear incompetence. York central was just as noisy at 430am... such ignorant inconsiderate drunken fools roaming the street spouting off.. grow up!

Room Tip: Don't bother..

We are really sorry to learn you were disturbed by external noises during your stay with us dskinz. This hotel is in the hustle and bustle of the city centre however we do try to reduce noise by having double or triple glazing and insulated walls. It is also regrettable to learn you were advised to book into an alternative Travelodge due to an error and we wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused on this occasion.

I looked at some of the reviews on here after my stay, which allowed me to form my own opinions. I don't think it's quite as bad as some say. You have to remember that it's a Travelodge and not the Ritz.

However, it could still improve in a few ways.

1 - There were no power sockets next to the bed, which isn't great when you have a phone as an alarm or if you want to take it off charge.

2 - The light switch for the shower room is way too far away. It's very illogical and you have to do a bit of guesswork with the other light switches as well.

3 - The TV is very old and there is no indication of what channels are on offer. Having a wall mounted set would be a better use of space. Brackets are cheap, particularly when bought in bulk.

4 - You need a microscope to see the soap that's provided in the bathroom.

5 - We chose not to have the breakfast boxes as they didn't look like great value and the Wetherspoons next door had much more choice.

6 - The shower isn't too bad and has a handle as a disability aid, but could also benefit from a chair. A wall mounted foldable version would be suitable.

7 - The location of the disabled parking wasn't immediately obvious.

Despite all that, there were good points:

1 - The staff were pleasant

2 - Checking in and out was quick and easy.

3 - Extra pillows were provided.

4 - There was plenty of storage space.

Overall, I would say that if you want a basic room and you're going to be out of the hotel for a large percentage of the time, this is perfectly ok. However, it could be better in a few simple ways, without needing to increase prices.

i have just got home after spending 2 nights here.our only problem was with the sockets, the one we could only use for the kettle was too close to the tv plus there was none near the bed to charge the phones, also the bedside tables were too far from the bed.
beside that we had an enjoyable stay and will be staying again in the near future, may even try the breakfast
