“Facinating and tasty!”

Holgate windmill is well worth a visit, but check the opening times on the website as it not open every weekend. Beautifully restored, this unusual attraction was interesting for our whole family, (five year old girl, seven year old boy, two adults).

The guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We bought some flour and some recipes and can really recommend the cheese and apple cakes which were easy to make and very tasty.

We were there about an hour and a quarter, and in the end had to drag the kids away as they wanted to carry on grinding flour by hand, under the supervision of the miller.

The only thing to be aware of is that the ladders to get between floors are steep and would not be suitable for people with mobility difficulties.

“beautiful and slightly surreal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2013

Its somewhat weird to see a windmill on a traffic roundabout , in the middle of a ring of modern houses but the restored windmill itself is an amazing sight.

. We were able to walk around and examine the windmill from different angles and admire the beauty of the restoration work,
There are open days/weekends , but we were not around at the right time to see the sails turning. I'd like to go again when its possible to see the insides.

There is a view of york minster and the York ferris wheel in the distance.

“Fantastic restoration, and great flour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2013 via mobile

Relatives in York recommended a trip to the Mill. Great to see a mill working and producing flour. It is an engineering marvel and the restoration is the result of much hard work and determination of the support team. Well done to you all.
Each floor shows a different part of the milling process and there are plenty of information boards with background and history of milling and bread through the ages.
The stairs are of course very steep and you need to come down backwards but that is part of the fun and charm of the place. The workings are exposed and if you have an interest in engineering you will enjoy seeing how the mill works. The staff I spoke with were knowledgeable and very enthusiastic - all adding to a great visit and making me want to return. I spent about an hour in the mill, and could have spent much longer.
I bought some flour only way out and made whole meal bread in the afternoon.
Great fun. Go and visit the mill, learn a bit of local history, and have fun making some bread afterwards.

“Worth visiting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2013

We visited the windmill when it was open one weekend. It is in an elevated location with super views over York. There is plenty of information relating to the history of the mill and it is possible to buy the flour milled at Holgate windmill. We were able to go up the stairs and see the workings of the mill, with someone on hand to provide information. Since then we have had a visit by two of the volunteers, who gave a talk at the local Family History Society. The talk and pictures gave us a very enjoyable evening and further insight into all the work behind the scenes.

“Holgate Windmill , York”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2013

Really good example of a completely renovated working windmill. Dedication and an eye for detail have made this mill into a really interesting and worthwhile venue. Very friendly and informed volunteers run the place and they sell both the flour made there and some tasty scones and cakes made from it. Oddly situated on a tiny roundabout in one of the suburbs of York it is well worth a look.
