The volunteers who have got the old mill back into a working mill deserve a medal. Well worth visiting and also well worth buying some of the mill's own flour. Don't miss when in York

I had the pleasure of accompanying a party of local historians to the Holgate Windmill last week.
Quaintly sited on a traffic roundabout, in the middle of a housing estate a few minutes from the centre of the City of York, this is a beautifully restored example of 18th and 19th century technology.
It is still a working mill, and produces proper stoneground flour, using much of the original machinery. There is access, via steep stairways (trousers are recommended for all visitors irrespective of gender!) to most of the building, which is staffed by pleasant, enthusiastic and well informed volunteers. As well as the technology of flour milling, there is also a lot of background to the original owners of the mill, and their successors, and the land surrounding it.
I can't remember a visit to a more interesting attraction! An added bonus is the panorama of views from the upper floors, all the way from the City to the Hambleton Hills and the Kilburn White Horse (Weather permitting).
Unobtrusive but thoughtfully stocked gift shop area, with reasonable prices. A quiet alternative to the commercial hurly-burly of the commercial centre of York A fascinating and painless way of learning a lot of history in a short time!

I have been a member for the last 6 years with my family I have a grandson who is mad about windmills we have watched it develop and are thrilled the sails are now turning and flour is being produced and sold.
The ladder like steps up to the top are steep but I have managed with a 3 year old and a 18 month old
At now 9 and 7 they still love visiting and can climb easily by themselves, There is a loo, model of mill a small grinding stone for kids to try making their own flour and at Christmas Santa visits well worth a visit see web site for open weekends

Restored windmill in Holgate overlooking the city
Although it is in the middle of houses / road it has been lovingly restored, complete with sails.
Worth a visit when it is open to the public (certain weekends)

Recently restored and now making flour again. The windmill is unusual in having five sails. I may be mistaken but I think its the only one left in the UK with this many sails. There are limited opening times. Full details are available on the website.
