“Ideal location - OK value for money”
Reviewed 21 April 2008

Just come back from a weekend in York with my wife and two children (aged 8 and 10) and had one night (Saturday 19th) at teh Queens Hotel.

Booked it through hotel.net where the offer was £115 for the family inc breakfast and evening dinner, which was OK. Only after booking and trawling through the terms and conditions did we realise that the children's meals were not included, but we have taken this up with Superbreak.com as it was their website which was misleading, not the hotel's.

The Queens is ideally situated in a fabulous location right next to the river. Our room was OK for four of us, and staff very helpful.

As said, we had to pay for the children's meals (£6 dinner, £5 breakfast each) and they went on the bill. Hoever, we had a bottle of wine and kids drinks with the meal, and they had to be paid for by cash there and then - couldn't go on the room bill or on a card!. It was a good job we had £20 to hand at half-ten on Saturday night. All seemed a bit odd.

Other than that, as another reviewer reported, our room also had an annoying electrical buzzing all night from the wardrobe. I had to get up at 3am and switch all the fuses off to stop it.

As the others say, there is no chance of parking nearby so you have to use the NCP park up the road - it cost us £17 for two days.

However, as a great base to explore York I'd recommend the hotel.

Just returned from a three night break at the queens hotel york. Booked through the york tourist information website and got a three for two offer. The hotel was lovely. It was clean and the staff were friendly. The cooked breakfast was really good. I dont know why some people have put such negative comments about this hotel. Our room was lovely and cosy. Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided in the room. We were on the top floor so had a sky light, but we could still see the river. If you are booking this hotel I would advise to book early, as we booked late and could only have a smoking room which did smell a little stale. They are currently reducing the smoking rooms from fifteen to seven. Overall this hotel really conributed to making our break so enjoyable. The city centre was just a short walk away and only a 10 - 15 minute walk from the train station. We will definately be staying here again.

  • Liked — Loved the room and breakfast!
  • Disliked — shame that they have smoking rooms

Booked 2 nights at the Queens Hotel through Ebookers at £75 per night breakfast included. Was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews, however we enjoyed our stay and really had nothing major to complain about.

The hotel is in a great location, we arrived by train and it is within walking distance of the station located on the river and an easy stroll across the bridge to the town centre.

Was pleased with our 3rd floor room, it was a great size, plenty hanging space, tv, tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryer and a nice big bathroom. We didn't have a view as such as we were overlooking the internal courtyard but can't complain about that as we didn't go to York to sit in a hotel room. They are in the process of changing some rooms to non-smoking and thankfully ours had already been done (can't imagine anything worse than a room stinking of stale smoke). Only one minor complaint re the bedroom - there was an electrical box in the wardrobe which made a buzzing noise all night - bit annoying.

The breakfast was great - buffet style self service. Loads to choose from. It did get quite busy and it appeared some people had to wait a bit so probably wise to get down early for it.

All the staff we encountered were polite and helpful. You can leave bags behind reception which was great as check-out is 11am and our train wasn't till later.

Overall I was really pleased with the hotel and would definately consider staying there again.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel on 14th and 15th March 2008 and I must say that we had no complaints whatsoever.

On arrival the reception staff were quick, efficent and very pleasant. We had a double room with a river view. It was very spacious, very clean and nicely decorated. The restaurant is slightly small for the size of the hotel however the friendly staff have got the service off to a tee. Our meals were served very quickly and the food was always hot and nicely cooked.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a weekend break in York, it is perfectly situated as it is right on the door step to the city centre. We pre booked a parking space in the hotel underground car park which is always locked so you can rest assured that your vehicle is safe during your stay.

We thought it was perfect, no complaints at all and we would certainly stay at this hotel again.

I stayed in the Queens hotel for 2 nights, for a weekend getaway.
First impressions werent good. The 'Reception' was bare and staff werent very friendly. The room was ok, but bit tired looking, and bathroom was decorated in a crazy style.
Came back on first night for coffee in the bar. As we hadn't looked around when we arrived, we asked at reception if there was a bar open for coffee. Man at reception pointed round the corner. So off we went. Walked into what felt like a retirement home (not because of th people, just the style and feel of the room!) Went up to bar, and the man form reception was there, it was like something from Faulty Towers!

Breakfast was nothing special. Tea and coffee was from sachets and overall feel was of a hostel.

York was great, but wouldnt recommend this hotel. The location was good, but didnt want to spend anytime in the hotel, so stayed away as much as we could!

this hotel is awful. lets start from checking in the staff were un helpful and looked like they really couldn't be bothered working. She was only a young girl on the desk proberbly working there part time for uni funds. The night porter was even worse we went out and arrived back at the hotel about 2.30 am and struggled to get in our room. when we asked for help he was ignorant and rude just some old man on a power trip. the hotel room was very basic in a horrible mustard yellow colour and the bathroom was even worse nothing matched. I would recommend anyone to go to york but next time ill be going i will deffinatley note be staying here
