I had read the reviews and was a little apprehensive, but didn't need to be. The location is great. Rooms were fine, though things like curtains, mirror and switches could do with a good hoovering and polishing. I slept well, bed and pillows were fine. The breakfast and area were very good with plenty of choice, staff were very pleasant. The car parking at £10 a night was a good bonus too. Not luxury but then not luxury prices.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river, fab views.

Lovely location, great bedrooms. Terrible arrangements for breakfast. We were asked to wait for a table with at least 40 other people. We were still waiting 20minutes later for a table!! We gave up as we had another appointment. When we came to pay at reception, we pointed out we were unable to wait for breakfast and our morning paper ordered had not been delivered. Total indifference. Told paper had not been charged (hardly the point) and that breakfast was part of the booking, if we ha not waited, that was our problem.

To be honest I wasn't looking forward to staying here. I'd been booked in by someone else, and then read the reviews......
Here's my goods, and not so goods.
Good
Location fantastic, just near the river and, away from town, the nice Bishopsgate area
Room was very big, with a double and twin
Room clean enough
Price great at £65
Reception quick and friendly

Not so good
(Big) Bed not so comfy, lots of ridges and bumps in mattress
Walls and floors paper thin. There was a couple in the room next door obviously compensating for their bumpy bed by making their own entertainment! There seemed little sound proofing in the adjoining wall. After they'd finished I could hear, as though they were in the room, an American couple loudly dissecting their friends' failings. All was very entertaining, except I needed to sleep before a big day ahead.
Breakfast was quick but a bit tasteless (as in flavour).

So, good price and nice location and people but take your earmuffs.

This hotel is right in town on the river. I had high hopes. But hopes are dashed the minute one walks in the door. Peeling wallpaper, dirty worn carpets, feels like it was last decorated in the 1960s. My room was very small and the window looked out onto the central courtyard (everyone else's rooms). Consequently, one has to keep the curtains closed for any privacy. The cleaning of the room was very poor, especially the bathroom. Peeling paint, mould in the shower, dust on the floor and water stains on the ceiling. This place is just about okay, but really for no longer than one night.

The location is great, the view from our window was from a skylight, so not really a river view unless you poked your head out.
The bed was comfy & the room clean.
Breakfast? Don't bother including this in your package. The staff appeared stressed at the amount of people who were coming through the door for food. The food was bland (even the sausages were flavourless & probably really cheap). The mushrooms even worse! No milk jugs for tea/coffee at your table. Coffee was pale. Hardly any service. Just hurried to our table & a knife, fork & spoon plonked down.
Have a coffee in your room, shower & head into town to find something much better tasting & possibly of better value.

This 2 night break in York was booked as a rail & accommodation package & was definitely good value for money. The hotel has a superb location & our room was very spacious. However, the bathroom was grubby with a lot of marks on the walls. There were also biscuit crumbs on the bedroom carpet which remained there despite the room being 'cleaned'. When using our tea cups on the second night it was clear that they had definitely not been washed & merely wiped as there were smeared stains still on them. Staff were pleasant enough although I felt sorry for the young lads trying to keep the breakfast queue flowing. Some parts of the hotel need freshened up as the decor & wallpaper is marked. I also found the left luggage arrangements disturbing as it is open to anyone. Despite these small niggles we did enjoy our stay & I would use this hotel again based on its location & value for money.

My husband had a conference in York and his university had booked rooms at this hotel. The minute I entered the property I was struck by the obvious lack of care....filthy entryway, walls in need of paint, carpet worn out, and, worst of all, the desk people were having private conversations about the clients!!!! The room had a gross looking dust ruffle, the curtain had a large rip, and there was a dirt streak on the comforter. I complained and brought a front desk person up to see, she agreed it needed some cleaning. Later those things were replaced, but then my husband discovered mold and a peeling ceiling in the bath. Needless to say, we moved hotels. This is truly a shame, since the hotel is located right on the Ousse River with a great view. And although some of the staff tried to be helpful, they were working against tough odds since it was obvious the owners were not investing in the upkeep of the property. Don't even think about it!

Room Tip: Don't go until they gut the place.
