“super friendly and great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2014

Stayed here for a long weekend in November with a friend. Due to the Christmas Market being in town was a bit limited for choice but this ticked al the right boxes when I found it online: within walking distance of the station, had rooms with 2 single beds (in fact we had a room with 3 single beds) and close to the centre. It is quite hard to find places with 2 single beds. The hotel is in a quiet side street, facing a quiet, hardly used branch line: woud be excellent spot for my train mad son! Those runnning it are very welcoming and helpful and our room, if a little dated, was very comfortable (great beds) and clean with a lovely bathroom up a few steps (it was very hot in the bathroom with a radiator we couldn't turn down). There is no lift so it can be quite a walk up to some of the rooms. Only a short walk from York Minster. We ate in on the Sunday night and arrived as other guests were finished so had the restaurant to ourselves! We had a relaxed chat with Louise but also had good service and good food.

Room Tip: If steps are a probem, ask for a room on the lower floors.

We arrived at the Hedley House Hotel, and was immediately met with the smell of paint - they were bang in the middle of decorating the lounges. Of which we were not informed of or given the opportunity to cancel.
The room we were given was an apartment, which was very spacious. It was nicely decorated and very clean. It had three rooms. A kitchen diner, bedroom and small bathroom, with a shower only not a bath. The problem we had was that it was freezing. All the radiators were switched off - so we turned them on thinking that they would come on. They didn't. When we asked Reception they said there on a timer and don't come on until 3! But could be advanced if necessary? Surely the heating should be on all the time in Winter. When we returned to the room the radiators still were not on - so again we had to phone Reception. They turned the thermostat up and eventually they started to get warm. We had to get under the duvet to keep warm. The room was eventually warm around 9-10pm. I would have thought that being warm was a basic requirement in a hotel. But the thing that upset us most that there was no apologies for it? Breakfast was ok nothing special, my scambled egg had obviously been cooked in a microwave and was a solid mass which I left and if I'm honest the whole breakfast was lukewarm. Taking everything into account we wouldn't return to the Hedley House Hotel.

Hi - Thank you for taking the time to review Hedley House

I am sorry to hear the room was cold. We did have an intermittent heating pump problem. My plumber came in at 8pm on Saturday night and got it going. He was in is finery as he was on a night out – Thank you Fred.

It is great to hear the room and bathroom were up to expectations and let’s hope you made the most of getting under the duvet!!

The decorating will be finished this week (the carpet is going down as I write this) and we are very grateful for guest’s patience in getting it finished off. Most people have said they can’t wait to come back and see it completed.

The new bar will look fab. The lounge was the most under used room before the renovation but I’m sure it will be the most frequented soon!!

Check out our facebook page for photos of the works

Regards

Greg

We chose this hotel because of its closeness to the theatre. We stayed on a Saturday night and couldn't fault it. The hotel was close to the centre and all the staff were very helpful and friendly. We were able to park our car for free all weekend which is a definite plus when in York.
The room was lovely and the bed was the best we've ever slept in. The room and bathroom had plenty of space and was warm which was welcoming after a night out.
Breakfast was lovely. Cooked to order and locally sauced food which gives an added touch.
Although they are doing some refurbishments to the lounge and bar it didn't really effect us and we can't wait to return to see it finished.
The only negative and this is through no fault to the owners is the closure of lendal bridge to traffic through the hotel. This made the hotel harder to find as the sat nav wanted to take us over there. Something that can't be helped but worth to take note so you don't get a fine.
We will be returning again this year once the weather picks up.

My wife and I stayed in December for 2 nights on a good value voucher deal, but then paid for an upgrade. We had room 6, which was a good size, with an extremely comfortable bed facing a large screen television for pre-sleep viewing! The bathroom was also large, with a hot, powerful shower over the bath. I appreciated that the fireplace and cornices had been kept, retaining a bit of architectural character. The room seemed to have been decorated fairly recently and was very clean.
Breakfast was made to order, with plenty of choices, and was perfectly cooked each day. Gluten free bread was available - always appreciated.
Staff were polite and friendly and the owners show a sense of humour in the room information.
We were lucky to find a space in the hotel's car park, saving on NCP rates.
This is a simple, straightforward, informal establishment. If you are having a break to spend most of your time out and about in York centre, it is in a very convenient spot, just a short stroll to the cathedral and main shopping areas etc.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back of the house and was very quiet. Rooms at the front will have a better vie...

Clean, quiet and great location, this Hotel was ideal for our New Year break requirements (2 nights stay) - close to city centre but nice and quiet for sleeping and for the 'morning after New Year's Eve lie-in!! Great welcome and we were very pleased with the accomodation. Spacious bathroom and bedroom facilities and staff very friendly and courteous. Would recommend and would stay again withour hesitation.

Went for New Year and stayed 3 nights staff were friendly especially Sarah who could not do enough for us during our stay. Brilliant meal on NYE and plenty of choice at breakfast. Room was clean and bathroom very spacious the only negative was the storage space in the triple room that we had booked was very limited. Great location approx. 5 mins walk from The Minster. Would recommend and would definitely stay there again.

Me and my partner decided to go away for New Years rather than buying presents and what a brilliant idea! The staff are faultless, so warm and welcoming, the receptionist as we checked in was fab, even served us for our evening meals, no complaints on the staff front at all. The room, we had room 3 (deluxe room) and although it does look over a rail track, don't let this put you off because unless you are a very light sleeper the noise is nothing!! The room itself could do with a bit of a bit of a refurb as there was a small hole in the wall near the bathroom, but seriously nothing really to complain about, just being really picky, it was spotless too, for such high ceilings I was expecting maybe one or two cobwebs but nothing, completely spotless. On the room, the bed: WOW!!! The comfiest bed I have ever slept on, I didn't even want to get out of bed on a morning so comfy!! The room was cold (as people have mentioned) but as explained in the hotel booklet, the heating is on a timer, and when the heating was on, it was more than warm enough. All in all the hotel was excellent, would definitely stay again!!
