“Welcome not very kind”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

When we arrived there we really did not know where to park the car, so we managed to find the rear door and parked our car there to go to the main entrance to ask to the reception, but there was just a do or bell. We rang and a bit angry man answered us. We just wanted to know where the car should be parked. It was not very easy to understand him throught the entry phone. He refuse to attend us personally.

Everything there was prepared to do it by yourself, but we did not know. That was the reason of our confusion. You just should use that door bell in an emergency situation.

Apart from that, the room was confortable and the price was quite good if you compared with other B&Bs around there.

After a road trip lasting almost 6 hrs - tired - talked to an intercom - problems with our mobile didn't help. Room was dark, dingy very worn and depressing. Only 1 chair available and this had holes in upholstery. Pillows like pancakes, no spares. Bathroom - 32 and half cm gap to slide into shower, which has lino tiles on walls. Sharp hook on wall also to be avoided. Shower taps put on upside down, cannot see which is hot, very difficult to adjust water temp. Safety issue for children. Don't catch you hand when trying to close door. Mould & cracks on ceiling. Wallpaper peeling off. TV at an angle on dresser to make room for kettle - to be plugged into power board attached to wall! Heard 'owners'? but didn't see them. Difficult to wash cups they provided. No attention to room during our 4 night stay - apart from the appearance of a toilet roll! Breakfast not available nearby at weekends.
York Hotel & Guest House Association could not have viewed this place recently - or the accreditation would have been withdrawn. Everywhere else filled because of cycle race following weekend. The video available on line must have been taken 10 years ago. York was great.

Room Tip: Don't stop here unless you like camping in the bush.

The booking was made via booking.com. The print out said latest check in was 10pm. We arrived at 9.45 and were refused admission via an entry phone being told that 9pm was last admission. Despite protests including those of another guest we were not admitted. We found a room in a pleasant and extremely friendly nearby pub where the land lady seemed not in the least surprised and said this happens to Astley guests all the time. Despite being refused entry the payment for 2 nights accommodation was taken from my account.

Stay well away!

thought I had a good place when the hotel promptly sent me a text telling me the room number and codes for the room I was staying in, the text said please make yourself at home, very basic room tv had seen better days biggest shock ive ever had was a sign saying
towel rental £1 per towel
please find towels to rent (inside wardrobe)
and leave £1 per towel used on the bedside table or desk
alternatively the towel rental charge will be deducted from your security deposit.
what sort of b n b does this is this day and age ? there was even a lack of spare pillows one each in a double bed which was flat as a pancake lol I was tempted to pad them out with the towels but didn't want charging for them, I hope they declare this extra cost to the inland revenue

Room Tip: your better of with a tent compared to this place

Basic ,, clean ,, with comfortable bed ,, self service checkin felt a bit impersonal , but hey we didn't pay mega bucks ,, we just wanted somewhere clean to stay after seeing the delights of York ,, and that's exactly what we got !!.

Room Tip: We had room 11 ,, it had a four poster bed and a balcony

Don't put yourself thru it. It was dreadful. TV wasn't working properly. Very old. Aerial not working and kept falling out. Had to pay for use of a towel. Sofa had a tear in it and was dirty. No soap available in bathroom. Had to go and buy some. No plug in Vanity basin so couldn't fill with water.
No human contact at all.

There are a couple of quirky things about this place like the self check in/check out and the fact you never see any staff. But it wasn't an issue just a new experience. I was sent a sms prior to check in with all the info required to get into our room, luckily we checked our messages because had forgotten about this part. There are some funny rules but they didn't effect us, deal with it. Its a 15 minute from the house to the city centre. We walked home late at night and didnt feel unsafe. The room was clean the bed was comfy and its in a good location. There are a lot of bad reviews about this hotel and those people sound like they had bad experiences but ours was fine. If your looking for somewhere clean, safe, comfy and well located at a very affordable price then Astley House is a good option. PS: I copied most of this review from the aussie.... :)

Room Tip: when booking on line we added a comment "nice, quiet room please" and presto.
