“Once bitten twice shy”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

We first came to The Waterfront a few years ago and had a really enjoyable evening with good food, welcoming pleasant staff all be it a little expensive, so finding ourselves in the area again and celebrating our anniversary we decided to come back, we however notice that there had been a name change to Barristers, although all the stationary inside still said The Waterfront so I am not sure how long ago the name change took place, maybe we should have taken that as a sign as this visit was awful, 2 nice friendly girls waiting at tables one of which had only worked there for 3 weeks, I think she should find a job somewhere else as this place is not going to do her any favours, she had to keep checking to see if the drinks we wanted were available each time it was a no, so we had a bottle of very overpriced house wine, you know the sort pop down Lidls and a bottle for £2 type but costing over £20 here, we ordered our meal Tempura Prawns in sweet chilli sauce and Scallops for our starters, the scallops were overcooked and ended up being chewy, and the prawns didn't even fill the batter they came in and tasted as if they were re-heated, next I had a chicken with king prawns in a brandy and cream sauce, overall it was ok but not sure why there was a mild taste of mustard to it, my hubby on the other had had a steak dianne, he usually loves this sauce and is the only sauce he will have with a steak which is generally just as it is, the sauce was a bit of a funny colour compared to other he has had in the past much much darker and tasted sweet, he doesn't like sweet stuff, as for the steak he wondered if it really was a piece of steak at all, it was full of fat and grissle and very very chewy, we didn't bother a sweet. To sum up this place, avoid at all costs unless you have good money to burn and no appitite for anything to eat. Very dissapointed and spoilt what should have been a lovely evening, and really wish I had reviewed the reviews but didn't think we would need to after having a great first vist.

“Avoid at all costs ”
Reviewed 12 April 2014 via mobile

Whilst visiting York for the weekend with my family, we were looking for a bite to eat and came across this restaurant. We liked the look of the place and so decided to give it a try, first impressions were good were greeted by the chef with no other staff insight. We sat down and started to watch the chef prepare dishes with bags of salad from Tesco's. Having inspected the menu, we realised it was extremely pricey with you only get veg with it and having to pay £2.95 extra for any chips, sauces or supermarket salad on addition of the already expensive prices. We were eventually served by a friendly waitress, but seemed unsure of what drinks they actually served. We all came across the set menu which seemed a bit more reasonable, so the majority of us ordered of this. The food was all below average with nothing seeing like it was freshly cooked, which is disappointing for how much we paid.

Throughout the meal, the chef (manager) was turning tables even though it wasn't full because he couldn't handle the covers. This restaurants needs more staff to cater for the amount of guests and needs to think about the prices! If we came to York again, we will be looking for another restaurant.

Reviewed 8 March 2014

Went to waterfront because it was recommended in york guide. When we arrived chef was standing smoking a fag in the entrance. While the steak was nice ( should be at20 pounds) side dishes were poor. The white wine was probably a 3quid bottle for which we were charged twenty it was not chilled .. do yourself a favour avoid this place ,rip off. Go to spunt ino italian. Great food and wine and friendly staff
