“No food at the inn”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

We stumbled upon this pub while looking for somewhere to go for an early evening drink in the rain. We were impressed. It looked really nice from the outside and it was equally pleasing on the inside. The atmosphere was great and after a drink or two decided instead of looking for somewhere else to eat, we would just eat here as the menu seemed to have a nice selection.

We chose to have a sharing platter but alas they had run out of the ingrediants. As per other reviews running out of food seems to be a problem with this pub. We were rather disappointed so had to go elsewhere to eat.

We did enjoy the pub though and the drinks were reasonable. We ended up coming back later on for another drink having eaten at the Golden Fleece.

This is a nice pub, but be aware as in my case as other reviews they seem to run out food regularly. They really need to buck their ideas up on the food front.

“Would have loved to eat here, but the cupboard was bare.”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

A beautiful old building in the heart of York. We would have loved to have eaten here given the chance. Six of us arrived early Sunday evening looking for some nice traditional pub food, the menu looked great with a good variety to suit every one of us. We all made our choice and my husband and daughter went to the bar to order the food and some drinks. This seemed to take an age as there appeared to be just one person serving, however we are patient people so waited our turn. When we ordered our food, straight away four of our choices were not available, so we chose something else. Then after paying my daughter was told her choice also was not available so she chose something else, then after a bit of a wait, we were then told that another three of our choices were not available. At that point our patience grew a bit thin, so we asked to cancel the whole order and have a refund. The member of staff was very apologetic and said he would refund us. It was the start of our holiday and as we were spending the rest of the week self catering we were looking forward to this meal out in York in a lovely traditional old pub and ended up with this disappointment. The guy was apologetic but hey it is peak holiday time in the city of York, get enough food in! We did eventually have a really nice meal at Oscars.

“Great meals”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

We liked his bar/restaurant so much we returned for a second night! There are three bars to choose from plus a covered courtyard. The menu offers a good choice at reasonable prices and the food is good. Probably one of the best steaks we have eaten.

On the downside they do seem to cater for groups and you may have to wait for your meal if the kitchen is busy - but it is worth the wait

“welcoming friendly staff”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

An old world style restaurant pub, close to the centre of York lots of outside space for eating and drinking on warm days with plenty of indoor tables too. The young staff were friendly, helpful, and willing to try to accommodate all ages. We were a party of 6 age range from 19 to 76 and felt comfortable and well catered for.The food was plentiful and different with some traditional, something for everyone. Lovely selection of wine, and some variety of beers.

“Old world charm in this old historic restaurant”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Started with a rose lemonade that tasted like roses, very interesting. Then we both had a tasty Cottage pie - ground beef with vegetables in a delicious gravy topped with mashed potatoes.
Lots of old world charm in this very old building. They even had some fireplaces that where lit.

Delicious meal & great service.
