I visit York a few times a year to catch up with uni friends and usually we stay in an apartment near the city centre. However this time we decided to look for a cheaper option and we were impressed with our choice!
This is a great place to stay, owner Emma was so helpful straight from the point of booking until we came back to collect our bags a few hours after we had checked out. Our room was a twin en-suite which suited our needs perfectly. Clean, quiet and well equipped, the free wifi was fab! The guest house was a 15 minute walk from the train station (with a jump over a closed flood gate :) ) and 10 minutes into the centre and the shambles.
Probably so much more to say, bottom line we would definitely stay again!

My partner and I have just returned from an overnight stay in the lovely city of York. We paid £60 for one night Bed and Breakfast the the Bootham Guesthouse.

The Bootham is ideally located, around a 10 minute stroll from the city walls and as we travelled by car we were given a parking permit that covered the duration of our stay, a massive saving on high parking fees in the city.

We stayed in room 6 which is a small double room at the front of the house. The room is nicely decorated with an ensuite shower and loo and a basin in the bedroom, there is also plenty of storage. As previously mentioned, this is a small room, however it is fine for a night or two.

The only issue we had was that the room was very warm, however radiators in the rooms have individual thermostats so we turned ours off and opened the window, and while it did cool down it was still rather warm, having said that, we do like a cool bedroom, so it would more than likely be fine for the majority.

Breakfast was excellent with the usual cereal/yoghurt and a full english with a choice of eggs and the most amazing bacon!

We would not hesitate to return as the location, accommodation and hospitality were all great.

I had a single room here which is not en suite. Nice breakfast, good wifi and very welcoming owner. The location is just a short walk away from the city centre. It is in a nice area. The room did the job but was nothing spectacular.

The owner was very welcoming and accomodating. Booked a family room for three, it was very small and cramped. The door to the en-suite was difficult to open. Apart from this the breakfast was everything that you wanted and ideally located near the city centre and tourist attractions.

We were warmly greeted on arrival by the lady who I assume is the assistant manager. Our hearts sank when she said we were on the top floor, as I have mobility issues and don't find stairs easy, but as we knew we were only there for one night and would only be going up there three or four times, we decided not to make an issue of it. Glad we opted to stay in Room 8! It was a delightful, spacious room with a walk-in wardrobe and toilet/shower en suite. Very cottagey and cosy. Spotlessly clean, throughout. From the skylight, if we stood on tiptoe, we could see the corner of York City Football Ground!

I always check the fire exits when I'm staying away, and was a little alarmed to read that my exit in case of fire was 'Down the staircase', as there are many and the last one very narrow and steep. But the safety standards must be high to have got a fire certificate, so I wasn't too troubled. I would say, though, if you can't move fast on a staircase, ask for a lower-level room when you book, as we weren't warned in advance.

We appreciated all the little touches, individual wrapped soap with the towels, plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits etc. available (not rationed as in some B&Bs). Lighting was excellent, and we enjoyed a TV programme before bed, viewed on a nice, modern TV. Water was hot enough to fill a hot water bottle direct from the tap! Very comfy bed. There was an air-con. unit in the room, which must be for use in hot weather, as I imagine it would get stuffy up there in summer.

Unfortunately one of the twin overbed lamps was jammed when we came to turn it off, and we had to disturb the staff at 11 pm to come and sort it out for us. The fittings were loose, so we dared not pull the cord too hard. They were very good about it and came at once. A hard yank on the cord was enough to get the light off, and they promised to look at it again in the morning with a view to getting it fixed more firmly on the wall. This was obviously a nuisance, but didn't trouble us, as it was sorted out so quickly.

We slept well, as the room was at the top and very quiet. Breakfast was perfect. Egg, bacon, sausage and tomato with toast, all cooked beautifully. I loved the choice from the range of cereals, yogurts, fruit and drinks which were laid out (Best cereal dispensers ever!), and enjoyed helping myself to tea in a proper teapot! Plenty of toast, jam and marmalade available. Went on our way really fed and watered!

The owner, whom we met on the second day, was very pleasant and friendly, and quick to apologise for the light-switch problem of the night before.

From the guesthouse to the centre of town is a ten-minute stroll, which meant we could enjoy a happy day in town and then sample a range of good ale at the York Tap without having to worry about driving back. Excellent!

Not being a regular hotel user, but sticking mostly to B&Ss, we're not really sure what comprises a 4* rating. Assume it's a high level of comfort, quality and professional service, all of which we found at the Bootham. We hope to go again. Very, very impressed.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues, ask for a low-level room. If you love adventure, ask for Room 8!
