On the basis of the positive reviews, we booked two weekend nights at this guest house. We expected to be pleasantly accommodated given what we thought was the relatively high cost of £90per night for the en-suite room for two.

24 hours before we arrived, we received word that the purpose for our trip to York had been cancelled, and so wrote to the guest house asking to cancel and offering that they keep the deposit. We received a response saying that the full amount was due regardless, and on that basis decided we had to make the 3.5 hour drive to York to take the booking. In hindsight, I checked the refund policy, and it is true to say that it clearly stated that 48 hours notice was required. So be warned. Always check before booking.

We did enjoy our trip to York regardless, but not really because of the guest house. While everything was as advertised, nothing was outstandingly positive except the location. The room was small and hot (despite our leaving a window open overnight). There were three lights over the double and single bed, but only one had a working switch. There was a television, but it was tiny. There was an ensuite, but it was also small and dirty in places. A parking permit was available, but finding a space took a while. There was a cooked breakfast, but as per the sign in the room it was served only between 8.30 and 9.30am. Even payment had to be by cash or cheque (although they were clearly able to take the deposit online).

In short, it supplied everything as advertised, but at the lowest common denominator. I certainly expected much more for two nights at a guest house for £180.

Room Tip: Always check the cancellation policy before booking rooms

We stayed here 6 years ago on a visit to York and didn't hesitate to book again. Every bit as good as the last time - thanks Emma. Friendly and welcoming with a great breakfast. 10 minutes walk into York centre and about 15 minutes walk from the train station.

We stayed in the Bootham Guest House for a Fri to Sat short break. The room was small but was warm and had everything we wanted. The breakfast was lovely and Emma and the rest of the staff were pleasant and very helpful. Only a 10 minute stroll to the centre. Would recommend.

I visit York a few times a year to catch up with uni friends and usually we stay in an apartment near the city centre. However this time we decided to look for a cheaper option and we were impressed with our choice!
This is a great place to stay, owner Emma was so helpful straight from the point of booking until we came back to collect our bags a few hours after we had checked out. Our room was a twin en-suite which suited our needs perfectly. Clean, quiet and well equipped, the free wifi was fab! The guest house was a 15 minute walk from the train station (with a jump over a closed flood gate :) ) and 10 minutes into the centre and the shambles.
Probably so much more to say, bottom line we would definitely stay again!

My partner and I have just returned from an overnight stay in the lovely city of York. We paid £60 for one night Bed and Breakfast the the Bootham Guesthouse.

The Bootham is ideally located, around a 10 minute stroll from the city walls and as we travelled by car we were given a parking permit that covered the duration of our stay, a massive saving on high parking fees in the city.

We stayed in room 6 which is a small double room at the front of the house. The room is nicely decorated with an ensuite shower and loo and a basin in the bedroom, there is also plenty of storage. As previously mentioned, this is a small room, however it is fine for a night or two.

The only issue we had was that the room was very warm, however radiators in the rooms have individual thermostats so we turned ours off and opened the window, and while it did cool down it was still rather warm, having said that, we do like a cool bedroom, so it would more than likely be fine for the majority.

Breakfast was excellent with the usual cereal/yoghurt and a full english with a choice of eggs and the most amazing bacon!

We would not hesitate to return as the location, accommodation and hospitality were all great.
