“Excellent Base for Touring York”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

This B&B is conveniently situated by York's ring road and overlooks the city walls, making it ideal for visiting the city on foot; the only practical way of exploring the city. The B&B was full so some cars were parked off-road nose to tail, which means that you might have to leave car keys to allow cars to move.

Our bedroom (No 2) and shower room were well stocked and clean, and in excellent order. Some people might find that too much street lighting enters this particular room at night. An excellent choice of pre-ordered breakfasts was offered, and served hot and as ordered.

The owners were attentive and their service much appreciated. A good stock of free brochures of attractions within and outside York were available. We would be delighted to stay here again.

My husband booked us a night away at this guest house for my birthday on the 19th so we could enjoy the sights and food of York. The room was lovely, clean and warm, the ensuite was modern and clean . I thought the traffic may have been an issue as it was near a main road but it was no problem
At all . We had a lovely warm welcome from the gentleman who wrote us a map of directions and recommended some lovely places . I have already recommended to my parents !!

This was our third trip to York but first stay at the Barbican House and we stayed for 2 x nights in November with friends. On arrival Adrian ensured we had a parking space and Ann greeted us with a warm welcome at the front door and gave us a map of York recommending lots of things to do and see. Adrian showed us to our rooms and we were on the top floor, our friends in Room 3 and us in Room 5, which was lovely, cosy and had homely touches along with complimentary sherry as well as tea, coffee and biscuits. The furniture was beautiful, the bed very comfortable with spotless linen and even though this room was on the front, we couldn’t really hear the traffic noise. The bathroom was quite small but was spotlessly clean with a good shower and nice toiletries provided. Our friend’s room was at the back on a slightly higher level than ours. They said it was lovely and quiet but it was quite warm and they had to keep the window open. On our way out we had to leave breakfast orders for the next day on the hall table. Ann explained there were 2 x sittings so we opted for the 8.30am sittings. The first morning the breakfast room was full and quite small hence why they serve in sittings. However, it was lovely and the beautiful china made our food taste even better. There were cereals, pastries, fruit and yogurts to choose from, which were laid out on the dresser and Ann brought your chosen fresh cooked options which were either a full english breakfast or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which were both lovely. On Saturday, we tried to change our Sunday breakfast sitting to 9.30am but were told we couldn’t as another party of 4 were eating at that time. We were a bit disappointed as we didn’t fancy getting up extra early after a late night but when we went for breakfast at 8.30am, Ann told us we could of had the later sitting as the other party cancelled that time. She said she did look out for us on our way in/out on Saturday but missed us. It wasn’t a huge problem and this certainly wouldn’t put us off staying here again but maybe a note could have been left for us on the hall table so we’d of seen it when we came in on Saturday evening. Ann and Adrian are lovely welcoming hosts though and their dog is very cute and friendly too !

York has so many things to do and it’s good if you want to do a real ale trail. As it was November the Christmas Lights were up so it was beautiful and luckily the Christmas Market was on so we had lots of lovely local food whilst wandering round the craft stalls. On the first night, we ate at a gourmet burger bar. I can’t remember the name or which street it was on but if you come across it, give it a try. On the second night we ate at the Guy Fawkes Inn, which is where we stayed/ate last time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as the first time as the restaurant was uncomfortably hot due to the gas lighting so people were wandering outside to cool off, the portions sizes of the starters seemed a bit random and I had to send my desert back as after ordering Panacotta, what I actually received was a glass of flavoured whipped cream so they did acknowledge the error and knocked it off the bill

Room Tip: All the rooms looked lovely

Briefly, this sums up our two night visit to Barbican House. We booked the only double still available for a weekend visit to the beautiful city of York. We usually stay in the named hotels and I can state that for less than the price of one you get two impeccable nights here. Just outside the wall in a quiet quarter, the city is minutes away on foot. We got a fine Yorkshire welcome from our hosts and found a warm, extremely comfortable room with all and more than we needed. Breakfast was pre-ordered and of superb quality.
A lovely stay that we hope to repeat.

We stayed here for a mini break in January. Received a really friendly welcome from the owner who gave us some tips for some great places to eat. The bedroom (#5) was extremely clean and tastefully decorated with complimentary drinks, biscuits and even sherry. Breakfast is pre-ordered the night before but we didn't find this a problem and is served in 2 sittings, which is great if you fancy a lie-in. Breakfast was very very tasty, made with local, good quality produce and the portions are very generous. Will definitely be staying here again. Well worth the money.

We stayed here over New Year , and found it to be of a high standard with friendly and helpful owners. its well placed for walking to the town attractions and next to the wall.We had the downstairs room at the front, it was quite and we did nt hear any comings and goings or traffic. The room was very well furnished and the en suite was well stocked and clean. There were lots of extras which we appreciated , good selection of teas/coffees etc and biscuits, even a decanter of sherry. Breakfasts are excellent , you are asked to complete a form to say what you would like the day before thus reducing waste and ensuring everything was fresh and local bought. The fresh fruit selection of strawberrys, blueberrys raspberrys and more was a lovely touch. The offer of a glass of champagne with breakfast only happens on New Years day though. Would fully recommend it.

Room Tip: Good to have the option of downstairs room if you want to avoid stairs.
