“Christmas group dinner”
Reviewed 14 December 2011

I could not fault the food or service provided by the staff. I took a large work party in for an evening christmas meal and was amazed by how the staff dealt with such a large amount of meals. A lot of the staff had not been in this pub before, I'm sure all of them will be back!!!

I took my other half here for a couple of nights for her birthday and we loved it. It's got the lot. Atmosphere, location, great staff and best of all, fantastic beer. We stayed in room 3. It's a lovely room on the first floor overlooking the Minster, complete with four poster. If I'm being really picky, the bathroom could do with a visit from the maintenance man (cracked mirror, wonky toilet seat) and they ought to put t'big light on in the dining room at breakfast time. I'm all for the lovely warm glow created by the gas lights and candles in the evening, but I like to be able to see what I'm doing while I'm tucking into my full English.
Overall though, this is a wonderful place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Minster.

My wife and I have just had a brilliant overnight stay at the Guy Fawkes Inn in York.
We stayed in the Belfrey Suite. Heaps of space with two separate sitting rooms, a bedroom and bathroom (with whirlpool bath).
The suite had so much olde-world character with it's low ceilings, small doorways and exposed beams.
The downstairs bar, with it's gas lights, candles and open fire, oozed atmosphere and all of the staff were great, really pleasant and helpful.
We didn't eat in the restaurant at night, but breakfast in the morning was awesome!! - probably the best we've ever had in York and we are regular visitors.
Great view of the Minster just across the street. We visited York to do some Christmas shopping and the hotel couldn't have been better placed - basically you stepped out of the door and you were right in amongst it.
Great hotel, great staff, great location - we will definitely be back.
Only point to bear in mind, owing to the number of stairs, small doorways etc. the Belfrey Suite wouldn't be suitable for some less mobile visitors.

When you find the hotel (We drove round York for some time prior to finding the hotel and the one way systems were a nightmare!) you will be pleasantly surprised.

We entered the hotel through the pub which was very atmospheric with its dark walls and gas lamps, and went through to the courtyard where are room was upstairs.

We had a great room that didn’t seem too small, the bathroom was small, but had a shower sink and toilet as advertised, there was no bath, but i didn’t expect to find one, as this was not mentioned in my room type when i booked the hotel.

It wasn’t the quietest room in the world, but this didn’t bother us at all, as it added to the charm. (To be clear, visitors to the pub can sit out on the courtyard drinking etc, so you could hear them talking and laughing, however at 10.30 they had to go back into the pub, and this was made clear with a sign on the door leading out onto the courtyard)

The bed was very comfortable, there was a good choice of teas, coffees hot chocolates etc, and the decor was lovely.

We had breakfast at the hotel as well and this too was lovely. My husband especially enjoyed the chefs homemade black pudding!

The car park is about 10 -15 minute stroll away, this was no big deal for us.

The location of this hotel is brilliant though for getting to the shops and attractions as it is quite central.

My advice to any other visitor based on our experience is - If you are looking for a modern, sleek hotel with not much personality don’t book this hotel, as it is full of charm, a good atmosphere and no modern furniture! (well not in our room anyway!)

My only bad point on this hotel was that when we were driving round and round York we called the hotel for directions, and were advised our car shouldn’t be where it was, and they didn’t know how to direct us in .... not very helpful at all. The hotel is on a little street at the side of minster.

We would like to thank the owners of The Guy Fawkes Inn for such a lovely stay.

We stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn for one night for my girlfriends birthday. We arrived on a Sunday so the road where the Inn is closed off for pedestrians. My girlfriend popped in and a very helpful man came out to the car to take in the suitcase and give us our parking passes. The pub was very busy when we got back but waited patiently and were shown to our room (number 3) on the 1st floor. Full of character with wooden floor, wood paneled walls and a four poster bed and great views of the minster from the windows. Bathroom was small but absolutely fine with a nice shower (lots of pressure and hot water). The bed was comfy and the linen was nice, soft and clean. You do hear noises during the night from the street and from the bar whilst it's still open but they weren't loud enough to keep us awake. Breakfast the following morning was delicious. Staff were always helpful. Would stay again.

We stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn for two nights in November (7th & 8th) to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and absolutely loved it. The atmospheric inn is a short walk from the main rail station, and could not be situated in a more perfect location - right outside the Minster, at the top of High Petergate with it's high-end shops and boutiques. Everything is walking distance, and York is best explored on foot.

You enter the inn through the the public bar, which is a small but welcoming area complete with a cosy fireplace and beautiful wooden furnishings. We arrived a little earlier than check in, so stowed our bags and headed to the nearby Golden Fleece for a pint. Check-in was uncomplicated, shown straight to our room (number 1) at the top of the first staircase. We had booked a deluxe double through Late Rooms, and certainly did not expect the room to be so big! The room had a very comfortable king-size bed, along with a single bed and a gorgeous dressing table. There was an LG flatscreen TV with Freeview, hairdryer and a good choice of tea and coffee making facilities including Twinings teas and Cadburys hot chocolate sachets. The bathroom was a little on the small side, but perfectly functional with some nice products to use.

A few reviews have mentioned the noise from the courtyard that some of the rooms overlook, but we didn't notice any noise even though there was a large group of men sat out there. We also weren't disturbed by the crowded bar, despite being situated at the top of the first staircase.

Breakfast here is fantastic - easily the best we've had at a B&B or hotel. The full breakfast is a decent size, with quality ingredients. Particular highlights were the scrambled egg, and the black pudding. There are also cereals, pastries, yogurts and fruit for you to choose from, as well as a varied hot menu. We ate at the restaurant on the second night of our stay, and must say that it was excellent. We had two courses and a bottle of nice Pinot for £45, excluding tip. The scallops were delicious, the rabbit was a steal at £9.95 and my husband thoroughly recommends the dish that Trip Advisor won't let me tell you about, as it's apparently a profanity! The menu has much more on offer than is featured on the website, but I would recommend booking as the staff mentioned that it gets fully booked every night.

The bar offers a good range of real ales and cider, on tap and bottled. The prices are fair and not what you would expect to pay in a hotel - two quality pints came to £6.10. After last orders residents are allowed to remain in the bar, but drinks are charged to your room. I don't know if the prices change after this, as we didn't take advantage!

The staff are wonderful here - polite, courteous, efficient and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble, and you're made to feel very welcome.

I would have awarded the Guy Fawkes Inn a 5, but I had one minor complaint which I didn't bother the staff with. We returned from a trip to York Minster on the second day to find that the cleaning staff had ignored the "do not disturb" sign on our door, and cleaned the room regardless. This wasn't a major problem, but the fact that they left our door on the latch for anyone to walk in was. It hasn't perturbed us though, we've just booked a three night stay in June!

Room Tip: The deluxe double is a good size, plenty of room if you don't travel light!
