We stayed here on business on the night of October 1st and arrived fairly late. Although the bar was busy, we were checked in right away and shown to our courtyard room, which was beautifully appointed with everything one could possibly need. This was an ideal location for me as a smoker, as I could nip straight out when needed. Although there were a few people outside that evening, most kept the noise to a reasonable level (especially when you ask them nicely) and most were gone by 11 anyway. The absolute best thing about this place though was the staff, who couldn't have been any more friendly or helpful. Everyone from the barman who very kindly found me an ironing board at closing time, to the lady sweeping the yard who gave me advice on where to do a bit of sightseeing were all fantastic. I'd recommend the Guy Fawkes to anyone.

Just returned from a 3 night stay here. We had two bedrooms in the courtyard ( two couples ) and have to say the rooms were a terrible disappointment. They were supposed to be deluxe rooms, but obviously our definition of deluxe has no bearing on the Guy Fawkes Inn definition. For a start the courtyard is always full of people, just outside the bedrooms, which is why no windows or curtains could be left open, due to prying eyes, noise and the smoke. The rubbish bins were also outside one of our rooms, and bottles are dropped outside there when the bar is closed.
In the morning, due to overflowing rubbish, there were a lot of flies around there too.

Our room had no drawers, just a damp smelly cupboard with some hangers. There was a light fitting hanging down from the ceiling, no working light bulb in the bathroom mirror, a shower that had mould on the doors and no towel rails at all. As for the luxury toiletries. We had a shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, but no shower cap and no creams etc.

We did complain and a plastic rail was left in the room to fit over the radiator, but no other problems were rectified.

Our friends also had problems with their room, with an overflowing toilet, There is also noise from people staying upstairs - the floors in the rooms upstairs must be very thin, so we could hear people walking about all the time.

Yes, the position of the Inn is great. But if you are unlucky enough to be given courtyard rooms it is hard to enjoy the atmosphere. The bar was always packed full, so we gave up trying to get a drink there most times.

We loved York, but will not be visiting Guy Fawkes Inn again. Once bitten, twice shy.

Room Tip: Refuse to stay in the downstairs courtyard rooms.

Excellent pub - really friendly, and a brilliant selection of real ales, etc. We had a light lunch, & the dining room is full of atmosphere - in keeping with their nameit is dark, but well lit with candles. I had a vegetarian chickpea salad which was full of flavour, & made a change from the usual vegetarian options. The waiting staff were warm & friendly. Only one loo for the ladies, so some queuing, but the loo was spotless, & clearly regularly checked & tidied. They also play excellent music (indie type) in the bar area. Will absolutely return! Thanks!

The atmospheric Guy Fawkes Inn was the incredible venue for a last minute birthday / anniversary surprise. We had a beautiful room - room 7 I think? - with a lovely view of York Minister. It was a large, nicely decorated room, with a lovely four poster bed and couch to relax on too. The Guy Fawkes was a perfect central setting for exploring historic York. Very helpful staff and good breakfast too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the minister.

we recently stayed at the guy fawkes inn in york, we were blown away with the level of accomodation and service we recieved. we were greeted with a warm smile and all the information we needed to make our stay truley memorable. we stayed in the deluxe room wich was situated in the court yard the room was very comfortable and had a real old charm about it, breakfast was wonderfull with an exellent choice of menu. we have stayed at the hotel a few times and in my oppinion you would be hard pushed too find anywhere better.

Room Tip: choose room in court yard, but all rooms are perfect.

I loved this place! It's not often the business traveller gets to stay in such an interesting building. It's essentially a pub with rooms. The pub is incredibly dark; lit by candles and, strangely, gaslight, which gives it an amazing ambience. A fine selection of beers is only hampered by its popularity and lack of seating space.

My room was bijou but comfortable (they said I had the smallest room, but as a solo traveller for one night this was fine). One hint for the owners, though - the shower shelf is at the exact height to bash into your shoulder (and for smaller people, their head) - please have a look and move it!

There was a restaurant on site, but sadly it stopped serving by 9.30 so I had to go elsewhere. Breakfast contained a black pudding so tastefully fruity I could have wept; I would go back just for the black pudding.

The staff were terrific, especially the girls in the bar and at breakfast. I loved this place and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Room 5 will be too small for couples.
