Myself and my husband stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn for his birthday. I wanted something filled with character and history instead of the modern hotels, I certainly got it. The room we stayed in was lovely - high ceilings, spacious and luxurious. The hotel itself was quirky, off centre doors and original wooden floors and furniture. Dining and drinking by candle light was a lovely change from the clean cut modern hotels. The location was ideal - just about 2 minutes from the Minster and a direct stroll into the cobbled streets that York is famous for. Over all the stay was brilliant, apart from a couple of negatives..........the car park was a ten minute walk from the hotel - not good if you have a lot of luggage. If you travel by train the station is only a couple of minutes away. The staff were not very respectful in the early hours when they were preparing for the breakfast meals. The loud chatter at 4.30am was not very pleasant. Also the original wood floors and stairs meant that the noise of people climbing the stairs could be a little too noticable. The breakfast staff were loud on their feet at 4.30 too!!!! These issues about the noise could be easily rectified by the management telling the staff to keep it down, not difficult, I can't believe they don't know the noise levels. Like I said apart from this I would definately stay there again, I just love the history of it all...................I would be telling the staff myself at 4.30 in the morning though!!!!!

Room Tip: Room 2 was large, airy and looked out onto the courtyard at the rear - the outside noise was non exi...

Have just returned from a brilliant weekend in York that was made even better by staying here. The situation close to the Minster is perfect; the bedroom and bathroom were lovely, although there was no bath and a lack of storage for clothes. However, the bed was comfy, the shower hot and both were spotless. The view over the courtyard is fabulous. The only thing that spoilt it was that, as our room had the fire exit door, there is a series of bright green lights that shine all night, which seriously impacted on the quality of our sleep. I would suggest you avoid room 6, although it appeared to be otherwise much preferable to the dingy four poster room our friends stayed in.

The breakfast was fine on the second day but almost inedible on the first; this was just down to the chef as the ingredients are the same. However, was very dissappointed by the poor choice of cereals and by the selection of cold pastries - surely it can't be that hard to warm a croissant? Also, very limited cooked options unless you like eggs.

On our first night, we ate in the restaurant. The food was good but we had to battle to get dessert - we booked to eat at 8.30 and when we tried to order pudding at 9.20 were told that the kitchen was closed!! We were eventually - reluctantly - served but with very bad grace. Kind of spoilt the evening.

All in all, not bad but a bit on the pricey side. The staff generally were helpful and welcoming, although it was a bit like being a teenager again on our last day; we had arranged to book out late but were disturbed by the cleaner banging the vacuum into our door for several minutes!

Room Tip: Avoid room 6 due to the safety lights but the rooms overlooking the courtyard are generally quieter...

wow...great place to stay in york, the hotel had lots of atmosphere, four poster room was great with a great view, staff were nice with food and service to die for pub was small but so are a lot of york pubs and this was ideal for walks into town and rail station only ten mins away, we have rebooked to go back again.

Room Tip: four poster rooms are best, but can be a little pricey

Me and my boyfriend stayed here in a Deluxe Double room for 2 nights for our anniversary. The room was superb, clean and had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and we weren't disturbed in the night by the downstairs pub at all. Breakfast was delicious, the staff were friendly and helpful. The location is perfect. We have decided to stay again next year too.

We didn't stay at this inn but have had food at their pub a few times which is a nice and different experience. Food is great and affordable. Loved the mushroom Wellington. Their Sunday roast is quite large for one person.

Some people would love this. Not me. I loved the history of the place and the proximity to the church across the alley where guy was baptised -- all very cool. Perhaps they didn't dip him long enough. The owners were great, as was the food. There was only 1 off-putting item - it was a bit too precious and feminine - 4-poster beds and designer soaps. Just not what I expected.

We stayed here for 2 nights this week and had a fantastic time, we left our bags at reception before checking in and when we went to our room our bags were already there waiting for us. the room was lovely, clean, big enough for the 2 of us, bathroom had a standalone bath and shower and a nice view of the top of the minister.
Dinner was amazing, if we could afford it we would have eaten there on both nights, definately worth a trip, the atmosphere is good, bar is always busy and it has a lot of character. will be returning for food, drink and a stay soon im sure

Room Tip: the 4 poster room
