“Lovely break”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

We stayed on a Thursday night & the city & inn were packed. Parking is about 5 minutes away at Marygate carpark, which the staff were very helpful in helping us find. The Inn is ideally situated for sightseeing, not more than 150m from the Minster. Indeed you could see the spires from our downstairs room. The pub itself is a lovely historic place full of genuine dark oak, low ceilings .........everything that you would expect from an historic in in one of Britain's oldest cities. Staff are friendly & knowledgeable, beer is very good (Timmy Taylor's Landlord being my pick!), food is good (breakfast especially) & rooms are clean. The courtyard is also a beer garden which adds extra space for an afternoon drink. We walked around the city walls & enjoyed all there was to see, the shambles, parks & riverside. Pubs are plentiful & there are many fine individual shops to admire & browse. We will return to York but maybe by train as the Station is a stones throw from the city centre. We walked 8 miles around the city in one day but it didn't feel like it! Then back to The Guy Fawkes to put our feet up & have a pint or three!

Room Tip: A stones throw from York Minster

I stayed here with my partner for two nights and was not sure what to expect.

It was right up my street. The pub has so much personality and the staff was lovely even at busy times. The room was in the courtyard and offered a silent night. Bathroom was impeccably clean. Location absolutely fantastic. Nothing bad to say about the place. Loved it and we are already thinking of coming back.

Interesting and quirky.

The dark bar and lounge with numerous candles lit all day (even breakfast) suggesting gunpowder times add to the atmosphere.
Good breakfasts and satisfying evening pub grub. There should be something to satisfy everyone

The G.F.I's strengths are the central location and their hard working staff. Chloe deserves a special mention. She was a capable jack-of-all-trades. She can check you in, serve breakfast, serve drinks at the bar and check you out. An excellent asset.

Our bed was clean and comfortable The bedroom floor wasn't. After a showering and walking on the wooden floor for 5 minutes, my feet were filthy.

The rooms are priced from around £90 and up. So I would have thought that the owners would have provided some kind of smart uniform for the cleaning personnel. All of them looked scruffy.
A comment mentioned in an earlier review by someone else.

The hotel have discounted car parking about 15minutes walk away. £7 for 24 hours.

We stayed for one night during a weekend break to York and it was an interesting stay... On the plus side, the staff were friendly (although it basically seemed to be run by the very young bar staff) and they kindly offered to keep our luggage both days before and after we had checked out. The food was quite good (we had the steak pie for dinner and it was tasty) and service was quick. The Inn is obviously really popular with drinkers and diners as it was busy almost the entire time we were there (stayed on a Sunday night). There was also a blues musician playing for a couple of hours, who was very good (although not so good if you like to go to bed before 10pm I guess).

HOWEVER (sorry Guy Fawkes Inn...), we had to change rooms because our first room had stained bedding. The sheet looked like it had faded pink stains on it, but when the barman (!) came to change it for us, it transpired to be blood stains all over the mattress protector underneath. SO GROSS!! Our second room was fine although the floorboards were sticky throughout, I'm guessing because they are cleaned with detergent and not rinsed. That would also maybe explain why the whole building smells very vaguely of urinal cleaner...? Also, the whole place just needs a bit of a scrub. They have a really sweet candlelit vibe going on, but when you look closely you realise that the walls and ceilings are covered in candle and oil lamp smoke and the surfaces all have bits of old candle wax on them. Plus sticky dining tables is a no-no in my book.

Lastly, and rather strangely, we spent a couple of hours relaxing in our room before dinner and when we came out we were greeted by Ben Shepherd and a TV crew camped out in our hallway! They were filming a ghost TV series and apparently the place is really haunted. I don't believe in that stuff but I have to admit I did wake up to the sound of creaky pipes during the night and wonder if it was something else!! I am, apparently, nothing if not open to the power of suggestion.

If you are looking for a historical "Lord of the Rings" style Inn with the common room downstairs and beds upstairs, it's 5 star. You actually check in at the bar with the bartender! The beer is fantastic and the fireplace cozy. The food is supposed to be great, but no classic warm stew and black bread with your beer, it's a bit upscale from that.
If you are looking for luxury, total comfort, perfect quiet, boutique fashion, this is 2 star. I love a great hotel, (the previous night I stayed in The Ritz in London) but am still glad I stayed here for the experience. It brought to life all those "Hobbit" style books I like to read where the adventurers walk all day then find a cozy Inn for the night. The lodgings for your horse (ahem... car) were a bit of a walk however.
There were the typical amenities in the room such as a coffee pot, TV and mini toiletries, but the old squeaky four poster bed and armoire instead of a closet was super fun.
The locals were bragging about there being no tourists there.

Room Tip: I stayed in a room on the front over the bar, the street was a little noisy but the view of the cath...

A warm, friendly atmosphere greets as you walk through the door, making you feel immediately at home. The bedroom and bathroom were immaculate with a nice, comfortable bed and I can't say enough about the fantastic staff. My compliments go to the chef, food was great enjoyed in a relaxing candle lit dining room. Nice central location with only a short walk from the station, great if you wish to leave your car at home. As with any Inn you'd expect a bit of noise from the bar until last orders but that didn't bother us at all and we look forward to staying again.

Room Tip: room 2 spot on
