“AMAZING!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2010

Literally just walked through the door on return from Guy Fawkes, can't rate it enough. After months of researching on the internet this jumped out at me. I wanted somewhere authentic, with a real fire (being December I was aiming for cosy!), a fab location, good food, service and lots of atmosphere, This checked every single box. If you are after, ultra modern, shiney new swish hotels with no character, then please listen to the other reviews and go elsewhere, this is a fab traditional olde wold inn! The room (room 7) was beautiful, a huge 4 poster (sooooo comfy!) with modern touches such as the flat screen TV, kettle (plenty of tea/coffee/hot choc), hair dryer etc. Bathroom was a little on the small side, but didn't exactly spend a lot of time in there. Location is amazing - we watched the bell ringers at the Minster through the window, everything is on the doorstep. Service was brill too - only ate breakfast there as they dont serve evening meals on a Sunday. Breakfast was lovely, fresh juice, tea, coffee, pastries, fruit and cereal and a lovely full Yorkshire! In the evening the pub was packed and had a lovely atmosphere. There is no reception, you check in at the bar which was really quirky - I liked it. Make sure you go to the hotel first to get your car parking pass, its about a 5 minute walk back to the hotel from Marygate carpark. Tons of shops, restraunts, bars etc on the doorstep. It also had free wi-fi, just ask at the bar for the passcode. I really can't speak highly enough of this hotel it's fab!!! Can't wait to return!!!

Just home from our yearly weekend stay in York at Xmas, and as always the Guy Fawkes is our favourite place to stay! The bar was VERY busy when we arrived but the staff booked us in quickly and let us put our lugguage in the rooms even tho we arrived well before the check in time! The bar areas are the best place to unwind with the gas lamps and flickering candles! Anybody on this site critising the lighting or furniture has no soul and should get themselves off to a Travelodge! The beds are superbly comfortable and the rooms warm and very very cosy, perfect at Christmas! Room 7 is our favourite with its wood paneling wonderful views of the Minster.Breakfast is hearty and well cooked with great choice! FRESH orange juice too! This must be our 10th stay at the Guy Fawkes we stay at least 3 times a year and as soon as we arrive the stress of modern life falls away! The ONLY downside is the outsde area which is a bit untidywhich is a shame because with a little work ,heaters, decent furniture and lighting would make a great place to enjoy a drink and a meal! Be back soon!!!

Stayed for one night with the wife. The Inn is on the doorstep of the Minster and excellent for exploring Stonegate and the shops of York. Parking a short walk away. Service was good. Had some beautiful soup for lunch and a nice glass of red wine. Lots of choice of beers and Addlestones cider. Room was sympathetically decorated. Quirky, but in keeping with the 16th century buidling. Breakfast was amazing. All locally sourced and very tasty indeed.

I've just returned from a 2 night stay at the Inn with my husband. This our third trip to York but our first stay at the Guy Fawkes Inn & we would definately return! The location is fantastic, right next to the Minster and walking distance to all tourist attractions. The staff at the inn were very helpful, and although we arrived on an extremely busy Saturday and had a short wait to check in, the service we received was good. We stayed in room 12 which is in the courtyard on the groundfloor and we were very pleased. We only have 2 complaints which were that although the room generally was clean, the floor was absolutely filthy with dust, dirt and hair in both the bathroom and the bedroom, not really what you'd expect for £109 per night. Also as we were on the groundfloor and due to the age of the property, we could hear every footstep from the room above. Maybe they were also inconsiderate guests but it was extremely noisy every time they moved and did wake me up in the middle of the night. This could possible be helped a little by the inn having carpets in the room above but be warned if you are a light sleeper don't choose a room on the ground floor. Also being an inn with rooms, be aware that the customers from the pub do use the courtyard as a smoking area, on Saturday it was noisy until about 11.30pm but the Sunday was much quieter and we were told by the staff that it had been an exceptionally busy Saturday so maybe it's not normally as noisy? Breakfast was delicious and the service was good. Car parking is in a council run car park a very short walk away through the York Museum gardens and really isn't a problem, just buy your vouchers from the inn for a discounted rate of £5 per day. You can park just up from the inn to drop your bags in but the York Minster staff are quick to move you on so if check in is busy don't risk a ticket, get someone to wait in the car! Despite our few complaints, as i've said we'll definately be returning to the Guy Fawkes inn.

My boyfriend and i have just got home from a weekend in York. We stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn and we liked it very much. If you like traditional old style building that haven't been modernised then this is the place for you. Clean rooms and friendly staff. Also we didnt get chance to eat an evening meal there but wish we had have but breakfast was very nice indeed. York was fabulous! Yorkshire passes are advised too as you pay £30 for a day pass and it's worth £50 of admissions for just about all attractions. The Inn is situated right next to the MInster so very central. We managed to book a executive double on a good deal so we did get god value for money so not sure of the actual rates and how you would value this for money but i would definitely recommend staying here if you like the traditional york atmosphere

We booked into the Guy Fawkes Inn looking for something a little bit different...we got just that...this is no Hilton or typical everyday hotel full of MFI units it is a traditional dated Inn full of old furniture ,wooden floors, gas lighting and candle lit dining and a bar that sells traditional ales..
There is no local parking with the Inn but thats a small sacrifice for the location of the Inn itself..you are within feet of the beautiful minster and you step straight out onto the historical streets of York. The parking is catered for by the Inn in the form of parking vouchers at £5 a day (added to your bill if you wish) and the car park is about 10 min max walk away through scenic art gallery gardens.(if youare worried about a small walk then York is not for you)
We arrived around 11.00 and parked 30yrds away infront of the minster and left our bags at the Inn until the room was ready at 14.00. We were given our parking passes for the friday and saturday and parked the car.
We walked around york until around 18.00 the went back to the Inn and booked in.Our room (12) was in a courtyard out in the rear where Guy Fawkes was born in the old cottage and was very spacious..nice bed flat screen tv old furniture 10x10 bathroom with roll top bath and large shower it was clean and tidy with fresh bedding and ample towels.(I must say this building is very old and you should take this into consideration for any small imperfections) There are rooms in the main building and the courtyard with four poster beds and a family attic room.
We went to the bar and indulged in some superb ales from the cask (bare in mind the bar smells when you walk in and this is due to the fine aroma of beer its very traditional) met some great people in this homely bar and almost forgot we had a meal booked!
The Inn has is own restaraunt and if we known this before we had booked elsewhere we would have eaten here the food looked great.
After getting back around 23.00 it was time for a last pint (last orders around 22.45) then bed.Because the bar closes early the courtyard is quiet for the rear rooms.
After a great night sleep time for breakfast...and it was superb...candle lit in the rustic dining room with fresh fruit ,cerials, freshly squeezed orange and apple juice and local produce for the English breakfast..the bacon and home made black pudding were to die for..my partner had smoked salmon and scambed egg...topped with fresh tea or coffee.
We booked out early to go shopping again (as we had 2 days parking for £10) and we were allowed to leave our luggage at the in.
Regarding the car park i carried my luggage back rather than drive the car to the Inn and it was no hardsship.
The staff were great and very helpfull the beer and food was superb and our overall stay was brilliant!
This may not be to everyones taste especially if you are a prim and proper stickler for Hilton perfection but we loved it and are returning for christmas shopping...

I dont know where the previous reviewer has been but it is hard to believe the critique refers to the same hotel. My room was spotless. My hosts couldn't do enough I wont bore you with a description, just look at my photographs and ponder this: York is bursting with mediaeval buildings, but this is the only one you can stay in (without even mentioning the GF connection). From Roman legions to Dick Turpin, the whole cavalcade of York's rich history has come clattering past your door. From the window of room 8, you feel you could touch St Michael's and the Minster beyond as a cascade of limestone pinnacles fills your view. At night, the lanthorn-sporting ghost guides stop outside the Inn door, regaling their audiences with tales of terror. And yes, they are looking up at your room !
At the GF Inn you don't just sample York's story, rather you become part of it. The food's not bad either.
