“ANOTHER GOOD STAY”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2012

It is a year since I last stayed at the Holgate Hill Hotel. I was in a party of 12 for a military reunion this is the 2nd time we have used this hotel. If you are looking for modern premises with electronic room keys, vending machines in the corridors and templated rooms then this is not the place for you - you need to spend a bit more and head for one of the big chain hotels.

If you are looking for good old fashioned service then this may be the place for you. The Hotel is situated. a short walk from the City Centre, it sits back from the road and has a small car park. The hotel is housed in a mature property. The bar and dining room are very pleasantly furnished in a traditional style. The room I was in was clean, well appointed and comfortable, the decor was showing signs of age though the bathroom looked as if it had been recently upgraded.

The Staff from the owner down were very helpful and attentive. We had a group dinner in the hotel, the menu we were given was reasonably varied the food itself was of good quality was well presented and we received good service throughout the dinner. Breakfast the following morning was served by the owner herself - pretty standard but good British cooked breakfast but with a good selection of cereals, fruit etc for those who wanted it.

I suppose you could describe the hotel as old fashioned - it certainly is - but that for me is the strength of the place and why my friends and I returned again this year. Opulent luxury is not on offer some of the decor needs attention but old fashioned service, reasonable rates, reasonable rooms and good food is. May not suit all but would not hesitate to stay again and likely will.

Arrived Saturday just after 12 and room was ready .Staff very jolical and friendly and helpful and first impressions of room after reading the reviews is that dont always look at the negative. The room was spotless and as I had to find a plug socket I looked behind dressing table and found one but to my suprise it was spotless and clean even where people don't normally look so another plus .The heating was spot on as was the bathroom and facilities .
Breakfast- Spot on - presentation great and not swimming in grease and was hot and the selection of breakfast was excellent as was the service . Its a definate return

It's difficult to know where to start with this place. It is tatty, dated and the rooms are stupidly small. The evening food is dire. Even poached egg on toast (at £5 was poor).
There are many more places within a few yards that seem to be better.
Please think twice before staying here!

my partner and myself booked into the hotel for just the one night, choosing this hotel from the good reviews on this site. on arrival which was around 2pm we asked if we could get something to eat. we were brought home made soup which was delicious and a big basket of sandwiches. we found out when paying the bill that a bowl of soup was £5.00 which we thought was quite pricey. the room was downstairs which wasnt a problem, although my partner struggled a bit as he walks with two sticks. the room wasnt overly large, but that didnt matter as it was lovely and clean, the bathroom shone and the sheets were white and crisp. these are things we look at when staying in a hotel. the breakfast was lovely with lots of choices and the staff were all friendly and helpful. you can jump onto the bus from outside the hotel straight into the city, this only takes 5-10 mins. overall a really pleasant stay and we will definately stay here again when visiting york.

Room was a four poster bed but had no drapes just a four poster frame for £100 a night / was not offered any facility to leave baggage in reception when we got there 30 mins before check in so took them with us round York .
At breakfast the landlady asked why we had eaten 6 individual butter portions between two of us and had we done ourselves a pack up using that much butter / I found this very rude with other guests looking round .... At £100 a night you don't expect to be made to feel unwelcome and embarrassed
