We stayed there during Easter 2011 and had two lovely four-poster bedrooms. Very nice and cozy, decorated with classic, old English furniture. Quite large bathrooms but you had to sit in the bathtub while showering.

Breakfast menu was excellent, ranging from traditional full English breakfast with ham, eggs, black pudding and sausages to a vegetarian selection.

The hotel is located in a quiet street and was 10-15 min walk to York centre.

My partner and I stayed here in September of 2011. While the hotel is quite pretty there are a few minor annoyances that make me just review this establishment as an average place to stay. First of all you MUST make sure you request a room with a shower. Not all of the rooms have one and otherwise you have to sit in the bathtub to avoid flooding the floor. The hotel provides free broadband internet, but be aware it blocks facebook, yahoo, and other social networking sites for some unexplained reason. I can understand a school or employer blocking these sites, but I have no idea why a hotel should wish to prevent its guests from talking with friends and family. Rather annoying. The beds in the superior double are QUITE small. So small that it compromised sleeping comfort, so if you are a large person or tend to toss about in your sleep it is important to request a room with a larger sized bed. The car park is VERY small and often there will not be a space available for you. The staff is at least helpful in assisting you with the car ballet you will need to perform to be able to park your car. Lastly there is no lift so be prepared to be climbing stairs with your bags. All in all, the hotel is pretty, the breakfast nice and the price reasonable, but some of the negatives I mentioned above make it only an average place to stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room with a shower or you likely will end up in a room with only a bathtub...

We arrived two hours before check in and received a warm welcome by a lovely young lady then we were given a tour of the beautiful rooms and bar followed by having our bags carried to our room early.
The room was just amazing with a huge window, four poster bed and a wonderful roll top bath. The whole room was spotless and looked recently refurbished as did everywhere else. We had a lovely evening in the bar on the first night and the staff could not do enough for us. The young lady recommended her Husband’s Inn for some food. It is called Guy Fawkes and is right next to the beautiful York Minster. Shane treat us like royalty and the service, food and whole experience was one to remember. Lovely people, lovely places and lovely time. We highly recommend and can’t wait to return

Stayed at Marmadukes end of August 2011. We had the four poster bedroom. It was a lovely hotel, very comfortable bed. Hotel is on a quiet side road so had a good nights sleep. Bathroom was nicely done and huge, but to shower you have to sit down in the bath or it could flood the floor. Breakfast was very nice. Parking is limited and double bays mean you could be blocked in. York town centre is around 15 minutes max from the hotel. If we go back to York we would be very happy to stay in this hotel again. If you want something to do at night the ghost tour that leaves from Exhibition square at 8 pm is very good, 10 minutes from the hotel.

We had to pay up front (£180, 2 nights) for a reduced price double room, as we were invited to a family member's civil ceremony taking place in the hotel. We were appalled at the size of the room for 2 people. There was space for one person to pass between theend of the bed and the wall and only one of us could get dressed at any one time in the space by the bed. Room 504 was twice the size, same price and with bath! (my sister in law got the long straw). I did complain and was told that both rooms were of the same standard, so no reduction in price for our "petite room". They have 4 of these, so beware. The manager did not see my point at all about the room size and made a number of excuses. How they get 4 stars I do not know. Reception for 45 people squashed too. Breakfast was OK.

Room Tip: Check that you do NOT get a petite double.
