“Strange Little Hotel”
Reviewed 2 February 2012

This hotel is located about 10 minutes walk from York Centre, so is in a pretty good location and just off one of the main roads into York - so it's pretty easy to find.

There's parking on the site which they charge out at £5 for 24 hours - although it's 'first come, first served' and it's quite tight.

The main hotel is very nice - a decent sized lounge, a bar area and a very nice bright breakfast/dining room area. It's got an intentional very 'old fashioned' feel about it.

The room I had was disappointingly small - you couldn't swing a cat in it (well, you could but you would bang it's head off all four walls). The bathroom was clean but only had a shower and I was kind of looking forward to a bath. However, the shower was excellent with plenty of power in it rather than the dribbly showers you get in some other older hotels.

There was a desk to work on in the room - but it was too small to really be of any practical use, so I gave up on that. The TV was small - but OK with plenty of freeview channels.

The best thing about the room was that the bed was very comfortable - I had a great night's sleep and it was nice and peaceful.

I didn't have dinner in the hotel - but I did have breakfast, which was excellent. The waitress serving was very pleasant and helpful as well.

In short, York can be quite expensive for hotels. If you're getting this for less than £60, then it's decent value as long as you're not planning on spending lots of time in the room. Much more character than a holiday inn express or a travelodge. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 out of 5 I would say.

Hotel was nice, room small although it was described as petite it was a struggle to store luggage. Bathroom was large with fantastic bath. Breakfast was great, serving staff friendly with good quality food. Sauna was out of order and despite having contact several times it was only when we asked about times for using it, we were informed it was out of order. It's a good 10 to 15 minute walk from the minster. If we went back to York we would probably stay closer to the centre it was a bit off putting after a long day to walk that distance when there are loads of similar places closer to the centre. But despite minor complaints it is a lovely hotel with great food , one of the best breakfats ever in a hotel.

We visited York in December and stayed at Marmadukes Hotel on arriving there appeared to be a slight shortage of car parking spaces, its a first come first serve basis however, you can park on the street outside the hotel.
The hotel is very well presented and has a feel of mystery about it which is nice in York. It is about a 10 minutes brisk walk to the archway at the edge of the city.
The staff were welcoming and helpful. The room we stayed in was a four poster room it had lots of character and charm with en suite bathroom with free standing bath.
In the morning we had breakfast where there was a good variety including cereals, pastries and a hot food menue. All the food that we had was excellent. We really enjoyed our stay at Marmadukes and can reccommend it.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a bay window it gives the room a grander feel

WE stayed one night with a Laterooms.com January bargain so it was excellent value. Large bathroom - no shower, very comfy bed, tasty breakfast with butcher sausages and home made black pudding - plenty of other choices as well for breakfast which was in the conservatory. Our room in adjacent building. Very quiet road but only 8 minutes walk to city gate and all day parking OK in hotel off road. Two grand lounges with newspapers, chess and board games and very comfy sumptuous armchairs. On the negative side one bedside light missing a bulb and could not fathom how to work TV (but to be fair we did not ask for help) also had to climb stairs to second floor room which was one of their cheaper smaller ones. Overall would heartily recommend.

Booking; Checked the website and couldn’t get the rooms I wanted (only 1 of 2 available), Called them and got 2 rooms. One day later did the same thing and was told there were no rooms available. So booked on line and got a room. Idle staff?
Rooms: 4 poster room was a good size but the conversion from a private house lounge to a bedroom looks like it was done on the cheap. When the en-suite was installed the ceiling rose has been left in place and the main light fittings moved to what is now the centre of the room. Looks very unprofessional.
TV fittings look like a bag of spaghetti is hanging from them and the shelf the Sat’ box is on is positioned to decapitate the unwary.
No biscuits in the room on arrival plenty provided when asked but smacks of poor staff supervision. All hotels sell themselves on the VERY 1st impressions of the guests they have, so you can see where my opinion comes from.
Bath still has glue or caulk in it. (By the plug hole if you care to look).
One of two bathrobes supplied came with no belt and the belt loop torn off and this was after a chunter to the night girl about other things. Lack of attention to detail!
Toilet seats (in the rooms I saw) have been bought in a Sunday market. More Blackpool B and B than ‘Boutique’ hotel.
My sons single was bigger than the petite double my sister had! Cats and swinging would not be happening in her room.
Staff; all in all very pleasant, especially the waitress at breakfast. However the night girl knows nothing and needs training or removing. For her alone I would not stay here again!
Chunter Over
On the upside;
The breakfast was superb.
Location is excellent; a short walk to town. NB Google’s marker is inaccurate by about 100m the hotel is on the side street St Peter’s Grove not as indicated by the marker right on the corner.
Bar service was very prompt and friendly.
Personal Opinion; Marmadukes has the potential to be a truly great small hotel but is suffering from a lack of supervision and a feeling of the owners wanting to be impressive on the cheap. Sorry but you can’t have both either be impressive or be cheap and then price your tariff accordingly. They will continue to make money because of the city and the hotels location but you can get better for the similar money just down the road.

Lovely settings, particularly nice to stay in during snow!

Great room and lovely breakfast. It is about 10-15 minutes out of York centre, so if you doing several trips and backs for say shopping in the day and then out every evening then you may want to be a little more central (taxi was cheap though)

The downstairs reading room was particularly nice with the Christmas tree up and original fireplace etc. Quickly skimming the other reviews someone mentioned a sauna, which I wish I had known had existed ;)
