Beautiful building on a lovely road only 10 minutes walk away from the centre of York.
The room was small but full of character and the bed was very comfy and the bedding of the highest quality.
Breakfast delicious but we had to ask for juice to be replaced, a milk jug for the tea and cups and saucers ... But everything was freshly cooked.
We were disappointed after we complained the tv didn't work and nothing was done about it until we complained for a second time...
Also disappointed we had to use the waste bins to wedge open the 2 windows to let some fresh air through ... They would not stay open and need some attention
We thought the weekend rate was expensive but we really enjoyed our stay in Marmadukes

Stayed with my partner for a quiet night away. Lovely warm welcome from all staff and breakfast was delicious. The bar was quiet but had a great selection of wine, perfect for a relaxing night away.

stayed at Marmadukes for 2 nights the four poster bedroom 502 with roll top bath is perfect - attention to detail spot on.
Lovely garden to enjoy early evening and called into the Lamb and Lion for drinks in their beer garden and had the best Fish and Chips at Guy Fawkes, part of the same group.
Breakfast was perfect - excellent local sausage and black pudding a real treat.
Unlike the last review - we found the staff very attentive and the stay lovely and relaxing, we would be definitely returned and highly recommend - top marks.

I booked marmadukes as it was reviewed as having 4 stars and a family run hotel and thought it would be the perfect place to spend our wedding night. We booked the loft suite and all I can say is that our stay at marmadukes was the biggest disappointment. We had an amazing wedding and we were lookIng forward to our stay at marmadukes. When we arrived the night porter was grumpy and rude. We were still in our wedding attire, no congratulations just passed our bag over and have us the key. There was nothing special in the room. Most hotels will leave you a bottle of bubbles if it's your wedding night, but sadly nothing. For the price you pay per night you'd expect something, but all we got was further disappointment as our stayed
Progressed. A lot of the lights didn't work, with bulbs out. The tap on the free standing bath was broken and just plonked on the side. When we went down for breakfast we weren't greeted with any warm welcome just an overrun and frosty waitress. The full English wasn't anything special but te following morning we must say the boiled eggs were good. when asked the next day if our hotel was nice
Buy our friends and family and told them about the frosty reception and no congratulatory bubbles or anything in the room, they were shocked. But my sister said she wasn't surprised as she had called marmadukes to leave us a message but when she asked the receptionist if the newly we'd mr & mrs Stoddart were staying there, the very unhelpful and unfriendly receptionist snapped back 'she wouldn't know' and my sister asked her to look in the book ' she refused' and wouldn't take a message to pass on to us. Needless to say we were reluctant to spend to much time there and when we went back the following night ( you have to stay min 2 nights during peak time) the night porter( different from the first) was no friendlier or welcoming than anyone at the hOtel. When we asked what time check out was, he told us he didn't know- and that was that! Surely working in a hOtel one of the main questions they must get asked is what time check out is?
Needless to say we won't ever go back and will not recommend to anyone. There was zero customer service, clearly
Know pride in their jobs or the hotel they work for. Overpriced and disappointing and the biggest let down of our wedding. A lot of our guests stayed in cheaper b&b's on the same street and had nothing but praise for the warm friendly staff, nice looked after rooms with attention to detail and warmth and respect for their guests unlike marmadukes.

Lovely staff , wonderful breakfast and room service excellent.
Certainly not luxurious though - furnishings rather old and slightly tatty and my bed throw and cushions could do with a good clean, I thought.
Edwardian it truly was and if you like the heavy dark furnishings, old wooden furniture and dark wooden floors you will love this hotel.Every wall in my room was painted dark maroon and with dark wooden furniture, well..... For me though (who likes light and bright, even chintzy) - this hotel will depress you no end!!!!
It's all down to taste is'nt it - but one couldn't sit and read in the lounge without putting the lights on,( heavy dark curtains and light- blocking trees.)
Bed so comfortable I didn't want to get up - lovely really hot water and housekeeping good but I did ask for my bath foam to be replaced three times - with no luck!!
I loved the friendly staff and the situation of the hotel, but four star? Hmmmm.

Room Tip: Room 514 was sort of large and lovely big bathroom.
