“Not what I hope for”
Reviewed 4 August 2013 via mobile

I visited Marmadukes with my girlfriend on a romantic weekend away.

The hotel is in a very pretty side street just a 10 min walk from York city centre. Street noise is minimal.

Upon arrival we were shown to our room. First impressions were good although the bed wasn't quite the four poster we had booked (but it was comfy), more a bed with a canopy at the top.

However issues with the room became apparent:

The sash windows made lots of noise in the wind as they banged in the frame

The shower attachment in the bath wasn't even connected

Taps and a toilet seat that were poorly fitted

Cobwebs in the room

Poor quality coffee in the room

Bathroom window wouldn't stay open

Worst of all our second night there there was a wedding whose disco and associated noise didn't finish until 2am. We were not informed of this when we booked not when we arrived. We were instead located in a room above the noise. The hotel staff made no apparent effort to keep the noise down, allowing wedding guests to shout through the hotel at 2am.

All this for over £300!

Would we come back? Not sure. The location is great and the hotel had charm but the way it's marketed and the price charged really do set high expectations which weren't met.

There were other lovely looking hotels nearby which I think we'd try next time.

Myself and my partner stayed in a four poster room for 1 night on 18th July 2013 and found the hotel charming, rustic and staff were very welcoming. We were given tips on where to eat out in the city centre by the reception staff and the walk into town was 10 minutes maximum. The receptionist even moved her car for us in the car park so we could park and unload outside the door. Breakfast was really really nice and consisted of the usual cerals, croissants (warm chocolate and plain), juices and fresh fruit and then you also had a menu for the cooked breakfasts. We had both and can recommend the salmon on sourdough bread with scrambled egg! Would recommend this hotel to others.

Thank you for your 5* review
At Marmadukes we do our best to ensure all our guests are well looked after. Thank you for your recommendation for breakfast, the salmon & scrambled egg on soured dough is a very popular choice. It would be a pleasure to welcome you and your partner back to Marmadukes

A very disappointing 4 star hotel. The overall impression was one of shabbiness, rooms furnished with large, ugly, non user friendly Edwardian furniture. The beds were not comfortable and the linen had seen better days. Bathrooms small, very plain - the absolute minimum.
The hotel's only redeeming feature is its position, its within easy walking distance of the City

Room Tip: We saw 3 and there was nothing to choose between them!

We had a wonderful two night stay in this hotel and found it to be clean and comfortable with excellent service from all of the staff there. It is mainly furnished throughout with period furniture giving a stepping back in time feel to this hotel.

We were lucky enough to stay in the Loft Suite for our stay which was very luxurious and made you feel quite special too! A suite of rooms unlike the rest of the hotel was furnished with a modern feel making our stay really comfortable, a living area with a big TV on the wall. A hallway leading to a separate toilet, a bathroom which has to be seen to appreciate with a double shower, a massive roll top bath and a sauna too if you please! Then onto the bedroom with another TV and a dressing room leading off of the bedroom with a dressing table. A very comfortable bed with crisp bedding helping for a comfortable nights sleep. An iron and an ironing board too for your personal use if needed. It was very warm during our stay but we had a fan which helped with the heat, but with plenty of windows to open and plenty of light we soon had a through draft making it cooler. The rest of the hotel is most comfortable with two sitting rooms to choose from to sit in, one had a TV and another just large comfy sofas next to the small but perfect bar area, a nightcap there was quite relaxing we found. It also has a nice garden that guests can use, nice for a pot of tea or a glass of wine weather permitting which thankfully it was during our stay. In the morning we were served an excellent choice of breakfasts in the very bright breakfast room. Breakfast was excellent on both days and the staff very attentive and helpful, nothing too much trouble at all. This hotel is such a lovely place to stay and we would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to stay as near to York Centre but be out of the noisier areas. It is quiet here and there is a peaceful charm about the place and only a short stroll into York centre. A shame they do not do evening meals but in York itself there are so many places to choose to eat you will certainly not go hungry! We ate in Lucia's Italian restaurant both nights, excellent food and service and a nice variety of food to choose from too.

Room Tip: The loft suite highly recommend especially for a long stay

Thank you very much for your outstanding review. Its always such a boost to myself and all the team at Marmadukes to hear our guests have had such a positive experience with us.
Thank you for taking the time to post your pictures, and for your recommendation. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to Marmadukes for more tea and wine in the garden while the weather is still so lovely.

We stayed here for 3nights from July 22nd until 25th July.We are four well travelled Friends
and we booked 2four poster rooms which are apparently their best rooms. Our friends changed their room as the first one was cramped, dingy and the bed was small.Their second room was marginally larger and had a balcony which made it feel less cramped. Our room was ok but dark and dingy, the ceiling needed repair where there had been a water leak and there was too much furniture. The wardrobe did not close properly neither did the chest of drawers. The safe had been disabled!!LThe bathroom although quite big was hopeless as the door didn't open fully. There wasn't a decent mirror on the wall, it was impossible to make up or shave as it was so small. There was one tiny bar of soap, why not have one in the sink and one in the bath.We had to ask for extra toilet rolls as there were none in the bathroom, !We had a four poster bed which was ok but the pillows were poor quality and when we asked to change them they could not oblige. The towels were good though.Breakfast was in the conservatory and was quite good. The eggs were cooked well and the service good. The lounges were also comfortable but the lighting so poor. The garden was quite nice also.Parking was fine but we had paid to have a space. We would not stay here again and couldn't believe that it had been nominated for a small hotel award. We thought it was mediocre at best.

Room Tip: Try the loft room,.Maybe that's better

The building and grounds of Marmaduke's Hotel were charming, but . . .

We were there during a particularly warm week, and the rooms had no air conditioning nor any fans. Actually, they claimed that every room but ours had a small fan. A previous guest to our room had supposedly packed the fan with them when they left. I don't know if that's true.

When we asked for recommendations for dinner, they only cited their sister inn as a place we might go, and they were not even willing to call them to make a reservation for us when we asked. They told us we didn't need a taxi to get into town as it was only a couple of blocks. Well, the walk into York was much longer than they indicated, and got us into town after many places had stopped serving food. The place we stopped was good, but it was no thanks to Marmaduke's.

The vaunted "hand-made" bed was lumpy and would have been uncomfortable even if the room had been cooler. The duvet cover was torn. The shower didn't drip--it trickled all night.

But the English breakfast was very good and the staff was pleasant if not helpful.

I don't think I would go there again. Charm only goes so far.

Stayed here for our anniversary , reception was helpful regarding area ... Times for breakfast etc.... As we were travelling with our 18 month old we opted for the apartment ....it was amazing ,spacious, decorative, fridge stocked with bottled water , plenty of choice with coffee, hot chocolate , biscuits etc It was very clean and the cot was clean also ( if anything a high chair would of been a nice extra) unfortunately we had to leave early and breakfast would have been perfect to start at 7 but because it started at 7.30 we had to miss it .. Would definitely stay here again and recommend.

Room Tip: If you want luxury book the apartment
